I took my first trip to the Grand Canyon this year at the end of July. Being from New Jersey and having never been out West, I was expecting draining temperatures. To my surprise the weather very bearable.
I stayed at the Best Western in Tusayan. It was an average place, but incredibly overpriced. However, after seeing the price of everything in Tusayan, it was about average for the area.
The South Rim is a much bigger area than I had thought. I thought staying there 3 days/2 nights might be too long, but you can actually stay longer and enjoy it.
For a $20 car entrance fee for the week, it was a bargain. Finding a parking spot should not be a problem, as long as you are not picky about the location. When you are in the park, time goes by very quickly, whether you are hiking, taking pictures, waiting for the trams, etc. The trams get extremely crowded, so you might end up with someone armpit in your face. You do not have to take the tram to get around, but if you want take a look at every 'location' in the Canyon, they are almost a must. That is because cars are restricted in certain spots.
As far as the canyon goes, it is the most impressive thing I have ever seen. Going at sunset is definitely something you should try to do at least once. The Canyon glows with beauty. It is also a little less crowded later on.
I thought the paths all around the canyon would be a bit wider and better cleared, but I might just be nitpicking. As far as the crowds, well yes there are crowds, but where aren't there anymore? Try to carry all the water and snacks you reasonably can as water fountains & food stands are not abundant. The one thing that amazed me was there were more ground squirrels scattering around than there were visitors.
The people I was with wanted to try to hike down the canyon. We were not prepared with the proper gear(boots, food, etc.) so it was pretty much a wash. For the serious hiker, it is probably an amazing experience. If you decide to go down, please start at dawn, because coming back up in that atmosphere is extremely tough for someone that is not physically fit.
I went to the Imax Grand Canyon movie and was not impressed. The theater was huge, but was the worst Imax theater I have been to. The movie runs about an hour and is not worth seeing.
All in all, the Grand Canyon is a very special place and one of the places I most wanted to see was not a disappointment.
Pack a lot of film and enjoy your trip.
