| Mattog's Full Review: Yellowfin Tuna |
That is the roar you will hear from your skipper when he spots a school of Yellowfin Tuna feeding at the surface.
Every time I go on vacation to Northern Baja I always make sure to include a day's tuna fishing. The standard method of fishing for these swift and voracious feeders is in a little 19-20 foot open panga. The skipper will stand at the back of the boat hand on throttle as you bob up and down doing nothing much.
As soon as he spots a feeding school off you go at top speed...about 3 knots :-) trailing your unweighted plugs out the back and watching them bounce along the surface. Yellows typically feed at the surface and its quite an awesome sight when you first pull up alongside a school...it looks like a fish blender.
Once you get a hit, a good sized, 30lbs or so, yellow can strip a lot of line from your reel in a hurry. They are a fun fish to fight and always give a good account of themselves.
Be careful not to be too greedy. A good skipper will usually call it a day when each customer has 2 each...far more fish than you can ever eat. The Captain I fish with, Ivan Villarino out of Punto Banda will also clean and fillet your fish if you want...I do recommend this service. We took fish home once to fillet and had all manner of wildlife around the house for weeks. Critters in rural Mexico like tuna!
Ivan charges $30 a head or $100 for four, including gear rental and bait. If the Yellows are not biting he will take you closer to shore where the Halibut are always hungry.
