Plot Details: This opinion reveals major details about the movie's plot.
Finally, movie about dumb blondes. The country has been calling for this ever since that first dumb blonde joke was told.
Meet Elle Woods (Witherspoon). She is the country's classic "dumb blonde." She attends beauty school where she has a 4.0 GPA and has aced a class in the “History of Pock A Dots”. This is until her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Mathew Davis) decides to break up with her. This comes as a shock to Elle as she was hoping Warner would propose to her instead of breaking up with her. He says he needs a Jackie for a wife, not a Marilyn if he’s going to be a senator before he’s 30.
Elle decides to go to Harvard Law School to try and win Warner back. She wants to show him that she can be “the lawyer type”. Elle starts studying for her LSATs which she passes and creates a bikini demo tape for the all-male Harvard Admissions Committee. She gets accepted.
When she arrives at Harvard, Elle discoveries it’s not as friendly towards her as she thought. They are not used to her pink dresses and “dumb blonde look”. Elle finds Harvard a totally cool place to learn new stuff and finds herself getting interested in law. Who says a dumb blonde can’t be a lawyer? Upon arriving at Harvard, Elle discovers that Warnar has a fiancé. This pushes Elle to study even harder and try and prove herself to Warnar even more.
The students at Harvard really don’t like Elle (although she is one of the sharper knives in the drawer). One of her professors at Harvard (Victor Garber) and his associate (Luke Wilson) see Elle’s talent as a Lawyer and select her in a team of law students that defends a client (Alli Larter) accused of killing her husband. Elle really bonds with this client because they both are beautiful, young, and golden.
Throughout this all, Elle starts to fall out of love with Warerand starts to become friends with his fiancé. When the head of the team of lawyers tries to hit on Elle, she decides to quit. She’s not going to give up that easily, however. Alli fires the head lawyer and hires Elle back as the head lawyer. I’m not going to tell you anymore about the plot because I don’t want to ruin it for you.
Director Robert Luketic keeps the screen looking very “lively” with bright pink and oranges flashing across the screen. Screenwriters Kristen Smith and Karen Mccullah responsible for the funnier than expected 10 Things I Hate About You make this film pretty funny at the beginning, the dumb blonde jokes then start to die off near the end and don’t start up again.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who is into those dumb blonde jokes or is just looking for a good comedy.
