| OrphanN64's Full Review: Cardcaptor Sakura Vol. 1 - The Clow |
Now, I just want to start off and say I am a huge CLAMP fan. CLAMP is a group of anime/manga artists/writers that consists of four women. I have loved almost every one of their works (I am probably the only non-perverted fan of "Miyuki-Chan In Wonderland" there is). So, when I found out about CLAMP's twist on Mahou Shojo (Magical Girl) anime, I had to get it. I watched 31 fansubbed episodes of the show and I wanted more! Then, WB announced they would show the dubbed version on TV. Ugghh, the dub was HIGHLY edited, had horrid voice actor choices, and just plain dumb. However, we now have the uncut version on DVD! NOTE: I haven't, as of yet, seen the DVD. This review is based on the actual show I saw through fansubs.
Cardcaptor Sakura follows a basic premise that almost makes it sound like a Pokemon clone. But after seeing it, it is anything but. The story is: a girl named Sakura Kinomoto accidently released a deck of magic Clow Cards on the world and now (with an Osaka-accented mascot no less) must capture them one by one. The show follows how CLAMP usually creates a seemingly basic story line but throws in quite a few weird plot twists right at the end (I bet you never expected the ending to the first season of Magic Knight Rayearth).
The original Japanese voices are a real treat if I do say so myself. My favorite seiyuu of all time, Sakura Tange, gives an extra amount of energy and excitement to Sakura Kinomoto that is only matched by her work voicing Princess Mil in Maze: Mega Burst Space. Also, both Tomoyo's and Kero-Chan's voices are superb with Kero's making you want to laugh all the time. This anime is a treat just listen to let alone watching. But that's not to say you shouldn't watch it. The art is an excellent blend of traditional CLAMP greatness and a new style they seemed to try. The result is sooooo cute! Besides, I love the art on the Clow Cards.
The characters have to be the best part of this anime. They are all loveable and add so much life to the show. Not to mention, their interaction with each other is remarkable. From Sakura & Touya's petty sibling rivalry to Sakura & Shoaron's crushes on Yukito to Tomoyo's deep crush on Touya, all are stupendously dramatized. The development is also there as all the characters (in their own way) grow. I couldn't have done without any of the characters because they all add so much to the show.
Overall, this is a GREAT show that should be on anyone's list if you are an otaku or a casual anime viewer. Also, this is one of the few anime that can be watched by the whole family. Though, younger kids won't understand the deep story and development in the show.
