This thing is surprisingly dull. Purportedly about Lester Burnham and his midlife crisis, it's more about three kids and their problems. And they are pretty much uninteresting. This misdirection is unfortunate, because when the film focuses on Lester and his fantasies, it's very effective. Director Mendes does some really terrific stuff in these scenes -- the rose petals being the most well known example. But it ultimately goes nowhere, in favor or following the next-door neighbor kid with a video camera. He's basically nothing more than a creep, as is his father.
Kevin Spacey's performance is terrific, as is Mena Suvari's. Great chemistry between them. But Spacey's screentime is so small that I must question his Oscar win. Win for what? He's hardly there! (Denzel gets robbed by white Hollywood AGAIN.) Annette Bening was good, not great.
All in all, if you are ready for a moderately entertaining, slow moving film, then rent it. Heck that sentence describes the average Best Picture winner anyway!
