I first viewed this movie in the Theatre, and now have it on VHS (sorry don't have a DVD yet, but when I get one this will be the first title I pick up!)... It is absolutely awesome. I won't say this is another Star Wars, but it is definitely a "Breakthrough Movie" in special effects and cinematography, combined with all of the surrealism you would expect from the top of the line B-rated Cult Classic...
The basis for this movie is somewhat standard for the cult classic, a small insignificant person like you or I living on the fringes of society stumbles into a mystery. The men in black suits appear and threaten because they know he's up to no good so he revolts against authority and takes a big plunge (literally!) into the unknown, where he finds that all he thought was real isn't and the real world is a far cry from all he's known. Sound's pretty standard fare so far right? Well, of course he now has to fight for good, and overcome all of those hard personal conflicts inside himself to save not only himself but all of us with the end result being the dawn of a new era for humanity... Still sounds somewhat typical but it is very well done, all of the players play their roles exceptionally well, and the mind blowing realizations from one reality to the next are as far out as you can go but still quite believable so there aren't any of those "Cheesy" moments that blow the whole gig- this movie has excellent follow through and repeat watchability. Of course the Cinematography and special effects are superb, with excellent use of virtual reality and moment freezing, the like of which has never been used in this capacity before.
So in short If you want to see where cinematography is going this is the film to watch! Instead of showing you a "Virtual Reality" this film makes "Reality" Virtual! And if you like the Cult Classic films like "Terminator"... this one is a Double Home Run!
