megdunn's Full Review: VeggieTales - Josh And The Big Wall!
There are some funny stories in the Bible. (Like the time that Rhoda answered the door and when she heard Peter on the other side she got so excited that she ran off to tell everyone before she even opened the door -- Acts 12.) The story of Jericho just isn't one of those funny stories. In fact, its a pretty gruesome one.
Josh and the Big Wall is a humorous version of the Jericho story. Can you see where I'm planning on going with this?
I'd like my children to learn what it means to obey, and that's the main moral to this veggie story. But I don't want them to think of peas with French accents tossing slushies down on bouncing vegetables every time they read the story of Jericho. I want them to see it for what it is, a historic account of a brutal genocide (albiet, with a strange twist at the beginning).
I would never push Christianity on anyone. Although I, personally, have made the choice to follow Jesus (and continue to struggle daily with what that decision means), I can't choose that same road for anyone else. Nor would I try to sugarcoat it in order to make it go down a little easier. I don't think that the creators of VeggieTales intended to mislead anyone. And I think there's some merit to watching this story... not only because its humorous but because it is a good starting point for a discussion not only on obedience but about the story itself. However, I don't want my children (all under 3 at the moment) to grow up with this story as their original basis of knowledge concerning the sacking of Jericho. (The characters DO mention that their story is a little different than the original, but that doesn't remove the images of those slushies.)
With all that said, I have to add that "the Song of the Cebu" is one of the best Silly Songs with Larry there is. Even if you don't let your kid watch any of the rest of the tape, this song is a winner. (So buy the sing-along or silly songs tape instead.) ;-)
I suspect I'll set this tape aside until the kids are in late elementary school and are ready for a good discussion on reality vs. artistic license. In the meantime, I think that Big Idea Productions have the right idea as they seem to be steering clear of Bible stories in their latest videos (such as Madame Blueberry... epinion coming forthwith).
