At least this great ship never disappeared in the minds of the world. The Titanic is always being raised in movies, books, film documentaries, etc. For good reason. It is simply one of the most fascinating stories that history has. And the most recent major motion picture "Titanic" has etched itself even deeper into the very heart of us all.
As we all know, the "unsinkable" British ship Titanic did indeed sink on her maiden voyage to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. Except for some recovered items, she still lies there as the deep-water tomb of some 1,513 souls. Of the 2,200 passengers, less than 700 survived.
This most recent movie on the Titanic like most Hollywood productions is a story that is both fact and fiction. There was a "Titanic" that came out in 1953, but I have yet seen it. I saw "A Night to Remember" (1958) and I enjoyed it. I saw "Titanic" (1996) starring George C. Scott and I liked that as well. Yet, "Titanic" (1997) directed by James Cameron has the two I saw beaten by an ocean length.
I rarely care much for special effects, but I have to admit that "Titanic" is one film that really impressed me in that regard . But I would not like any film for that alone. A movie has to have a good to great script for me to enjoy it. "Titanic" more than delivers there.
The acting was great by all actors involved in this masterpiece. The music score was beautiful. And, yes, I really loved the theme song sung by Celine Dion. It is one of her rare songs I do like.
There are two flaws in this otherwise perfect work: (1) I could have done without the spitting instruction scene, and (2) the use of "the finger" by the heroine was tasteless and seemed highly inappropriate for a film depicting the 1910s.
Go rent this blockbuster and see it again. If you haven't seen it yet, you must have been on the planet Pluto for the last 2 years. Get a copy of it, if that is so, you are in for a treat of oceanic proportions.
