"Brassed Off" is a bit glib, but it's a fun piece, especially for someone like me who has a little bit of Red in my political views. A story of the brass band at a mine which is closing, the film is political without raging or inserting long Marxist soliloquies into the dialogue. The romantic subplot is predictable, but sweet all the same, and many of the incidental characters are winning and funny. Gloria (Tara Fitzgerald) shows up with her flugelhorn to save the band; while she's shut out at first, and her motivations questioned, there's never any question that she'll ultimately be accepted, or that eventually her romance with Andy (Ewan McGregor) will survive. Don't watch this looking for suspense of any order--you won't find it. Still, though, it's worth watching, especially if you like brass music...the soundtrack is compelling and fun.
