...that this is a wonderful movie and that Paul Williams is a genius. She will tell you because I will be in another room doing something else. However, I enjoy her passion about this film and saw the same in your review. A truly excellent job - as always.
Best,

**Cons: Jessica Harper shines in this film but could stand a few dance lessons.**
... I couldn't resist mentioning that Jessica Harper starred in one of my all-time favorite horror films, Dario Argento's Suspiria. In Suspiria she played Susy Bannion, a young American dancer who has traveled to Europe to join a famous ballet school. *grin*
Nice review on a film that didn't scare the be-jeebers out of me (I suppose I am a bit jaded on the horror stuff by now) but has remained an interestingly humorous cult classic, to be sure. :)

Phantom is indeed a cult classic (Reply to this comment)
by ChrisJarmick
Although I wouldn't call it a scary film, it's a wonderful film.
DePalma's rock version of Phantom of the Opera which had been filmed 6 or 7 times previously recieves a nicely conceived face-lift.
The film makes it's points about the music industry, cult of personality, the public's fickleness, the need for success and
artistic purity.
It also worth noting the stage show elements in the film were very original and were once way over the top in 1974 as the glam-rock scene was just beginning and Alice Cooper had not toured with his whole Welcome to My Nightmare stage-shows. In fact the scenes in this film inspired him.
Unfortunately the film bombed when it was first released and only became a modest success when it was released a few years later.
It's dated and lost some of its impact but I still enjoy it...
I love the cynical final song...
(music and lyrics by Paul Williams)
The Hell of It.
Life's a game where they're bound to beat you
and time's a trick they can turn to cheat you
And we only waste it anyway
and that's the hell of it.
Good review,
Thanks.
