Pros: The vocals. Great improvement in the band. Beautiful songs.
Cons: Little or nothing.
The Bottom Line: An album exploding with stubborn determination, encourages perseverance. Yet still dripping with that sadness that he will never shift. A masterpiece.
devourme's Full Review: You Are the Quarry by Kelis/Morrissey
It's no secret that almost everyone had written Morrissey off, before hearing this album. "Past his best" they said. I mumbled and grumbled along with most of them, but bought this album regardless of premeditated judgements - and thank God I did.
His lyrics continue beautifully, dominating the underlying (much improved) band playing behind him - everything seems to have fallen into place once again. He sounds powerful. Commanding. Questioning.
You Are the Quarry is a step forward for Morrissey. It's playful, full of the tongue in cheek lyrics that we have come to love and expect from our spokesman. The songs are split perfectly to fit into any possible mindset.
the best of the bunch:
I Have Forgiven Jesus - one of the most beautiful songs he has ever written. In it, he seems to try to justify himself to Jesus.."I was a nice kid"..before turning on Him, and demanding (in rage demonstrated so peacefully that it catches your breath) to know "why did you give me so much love, in a loveless world?".
Let Me Kiss You - there is no other way to describe this song, other than astounding. The concept is so simple, yet he orchestrates it through intricate..dumbfounding lyrics and through those vocals, it's something only he could achieve with such poise. The pleading in his voice as he wails.."close your eyes, and think of someone you physically admire..and let me kiss you, oh oh oh" is almost painful to listen to.
How Could Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel? - a stand out track. Jumpy and loud, Morrissey is cocky in brilliant fashion. He curses, lashing out at the world - how dare they try to understand, a stubborn and (typically) wonderful song.
You Know I Couldn't Last - his voice on this song; paradise.
This album is beautiful. Not his best, but getting there. Cocky, but you can feel him shifting his feet - in that charming English way. It's self confessional, brutally honest..raw and beautiful, all at once. A fantastic achievement, there's hope for misery yet.
You Are the Quarry, the first new solo material from Morrissey in seven years; it is an album of original songs using keyboards interwoven with crunch...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
