amartinezfonts's Full Review: Amores Perros by Original Soundtrack
I bought this CD after hearing the director of the movie Amores Perros, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu on NPR. He spent a good piece of the interview talking about the soundtrack, which led me to believe that this wasn't just one of those soundtracks that gets thrown together by a marketing team at a big agency.
I haven't been disappointed. It's actually a double-CD, with the first CD being popular music, and the second being (I'm guessing) music influenced by the movie.
The first CD definitely rocks more than the second. There's a good cross-section of latin music. I would say that it's all Mexican, but I know Celia Cruz (a nice addition) is Cuban. You get everything from Rap (Control Machete) to pop (Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas) to Mana-style rock ballads (Nacha Pop) to traditional latin beats (Celia Cruz, Los del Garrote). They even put on The Hollies' "Long Cool Woman," as a testament to the director's love of Classic Rock.
The second CD is a little less impressive -- I think that's inevitable when you're asking artists to specifically write a song for a movie. It's a nice complement to the first CD, though.
Definitely see this movie. It's a great investigation into the conflicted psyche of modern Mexico City, and after listening to the soundtrack you'll like it even more.
