ericgreene's Full Review: Faded [Single] by Souldecision
I hate boy bands. I do. I really, really do. In fact, I don’t even like the name “boy band”. This genre implies that the all-male pop groups of today are considered to be at the same level as, say, The Beatles or The Beach Boys. When I hear “The Shape of My Heart” it eats me up inside. I like pop, don’t get me wrong… it isn’t as far up there with me as reggae or hip-hop, but I can handle it.
From time to time … when I can’t find any good CDs in my car amidst all of the pop cans and various trash strewn about it’s interior, I will turn on the radio. For the most part, it never moves off the AM band … I like talk. Last week however I took a venture on the wild side and flipped it over to FM. I found a popular local station called “Kiss” known for it’s top 20 play. Most of the music seemed like it teetered on trash … and then I came upon this song. What made it so special? Why did I feel compelled to buy the single? Why is it hidden away in my room so that no one discovers my hidden “music affair”? Let’s find out.
Musical style of song – How I can justify this.
Ok, on the surface Soul Decision is a “Boy Band”. It is 3-guy band … it is pop. There are however factors that take away from that stereotype when it comes to these unique artists.
1. The lead singer plays the guitar. – Can Justin of ‘N Sync play the guitar? I am guessing not. For me, playing instruments (or lack of) is a major reason why some bands are considered “cookie-cutter” and others are considered legitimate.
2. This is a band from the UK. Does this matter? Well, it is a change of pace and the song does sound unique. This song, for one, is much more Euro-dance to me than straight-up pop. Check it out for yourself.
3. Rap interlude. More info coming up.
The song, broken up.
This song has 3 major parts (Not in this order).
1. A Chorus –
Kind of faded, but I'm feeling alright
Thinkin' about making my move tonight
I can't pretend that you're only my friend when you're holdin' my body tight
'Cause I like the way you're making your move I like the way you're making me wait
At the end of the night, I'm gonna make you feel like mine
You'll be coming on home with me, yeah, yeah, yeah
Hmm… a song about getting on? I think so. Basically this song is a reflection into the speakers mind as he images himself telling “this” girl how he really feels. He is one horny guy … heh, not exactly a song you want to bring home to mom!
2. A Rap Interlude
When we first met…
That deal was stated.
You stepped like my (‘lil help?),
The way we compensated.
Just another day,
Around the way.
With me up close everything's ok
‘Cause I'm not like the rest.
Indecision with the best
Thrust from a full court press.
Just because they hated.
How's it go?
Faded …
This is really, really unique! Just when you think the last thing the group would do is break from its pop sound … a deep, hard, rap voice comes on and takes the song up a level. Very cool and it fits in extremely well. Surprisingly appropriate. Can you see the Backstreet Boys with a rap portion of one of their songs? I think now.
3. 2 verses
More innuendo…
I've been trying to figure out what I'm gonna say to you to get some play, yeah
…Wondering why that you and I haven't hit it
Can we get it on…?
…Couldn't we do what we did last night…?
Hmm… this song is really blatant, huh? The rest of the non-posted lyrics are similar to these in nature.
So, Eric, summarize this song.
Will do. The song has a great beat and bass with guitar action and unique vocals. The lyrics are a bit risqué, but interesting none the less. A good driving/date song. It sounds good … some of the best pop I have ever heard.
Overall – 37/40 – 5 Stars - A great band that I look forward to seeing more from in the future.
Where can I find it?
This song is still in the Top 20 and should be available at all major record stores at the time of this posting. If read later, I would look for it on bn.com, amazon.com or ebay.com.
