Funky House Tracks, Some of Amos' Best Dance Mixes
Written: Jan 18 '04
Product Rating:
Pros: The "Lucifer" remix is top notch, and the dance mixes are funky if not memorable.
Cons: One wonders how Amos got turned into a dance diva to begin with.
The Bottom Line: A funky if generic collection of house remixes pay little attention to song content, but make you want to shake your behind and grab a cocktail.
easterbradford's Full Review: Jackie's Strength [Maxi Single] by Tori Amos
Many people don't stop to think about it, but the truth is Tori Amos, a piano-ballad chauntusse, has had her greatest commercial success with dance floor hits. Her 1996 smash "Professional Widow" (her only American #1 single) was followed quickly by her "Blue Skies" track with B.T. Her label desperately tried to follow that success with ill-concieved remixes of "In the Springtime of His Voodoo," but it wasn't until 1998's "Jackie's Strength" that Amos replaned her heels firmly back into the clubs.
The original Jackie's Strength is, unsurprisingly, a piano ballad comparing Amos' own romance with her husband to that of Jackie Kennedy's. It is evokative of the 60s, as Amos recalls "stickers licked on lunchboxes" and "worshiping David Cassidey." Unlike "Professional Widow," "Jackie" uses all of the original lyrics in it's remixes. Funky house grooves and thundering drum loops swirl around the track as Amos' "Hey Jackie...yeah" is circulated throughout the mix as an almost chant.
None of the mixes differ much from the others (see track listing at bottom of review.) Truth be told, they are fairly generic as far as house mixes of pop songs go. The tracks are b-sided with a remix of 1996's "Father Lucifer". Far less suited for dancing, it is instead a funky, R&B flavored meltdown jam that may have easily been mixed by Missy Elliot. Additionally, an instrumental version of the "Lucifer" mix is included.
This is hardly relevatory material from Amos, but for fans of dance music it is a vital title.
