AphexSliter's Full Review: Richard D. James Album by Aphex Twin
Aphex Twin's "Richard D. James" album is the follow up to his critically-acclaimed "...I care because you do," and is amazing in its own right. The US release is great because it compiles the original UK release with the "girl/boy song" ep for the same low low price. This album marks Mr. Twin's first major foray into the world of drill n bass (after the innovative "Donkey Rhubarb" ep). The most impressive feature of the disc is its ability to be completely original, even (and most impressively) in comparison to himself. In other words, while the whole thing is distinctively Aphex, each track easy to tell apart from the others. It's a good thing, especially with all this super bland techno flooding the market.
While the full effect of the RDJ sound is hard to describe, I'll try. The drum tracks are simply amazing. They make regular drum n bass sound like disco. I can't believe how long it must have taken to put them together. Incomprehensible. The first track, "4", sounds like it begins in the middle. It's hard to describe, but very cool. Some people would say this music is hard to hum along to, but I disagree. The melodies are so beautiful and original that I can't help but hum with them. The standout track of the album is the "girl/boy song" which melds the crazy drum tracks with orchestral string samples. Amazing.
You absolutely must listen to this album once in your life.
