princealessio's Full Review: Disarm [Single] by Smashing Pumpkins
Whoa! Your telling me I can write about singles from my favorite band? This is too cool. I was surprised to find these listed at epinions. I guess early on people added whatever topics and categories they wanted. Anyway, back to business. I'm going to rate all these singles albums from a non biased side. First I will start off with my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song...... "Disarm"
This CD single comes in 2 different editions. Both of these cd's feature "Disarm" yet have different B-sides. One is called "Smile" and features the B-sides "Sooth" and "Blew Away" Sooth is a very soothing song as the title suggests and is kind of a lullabye. "Blew Away" is different since it features James Iha instead of Billy Corgan on vocals. The other version of the cd is called "Heart" and it features the B-sides "Landslide" and "Dancing In The Moonlight" Both of these are covers of other bands. "Landslide" is the cover of the Fleetwood Mac song. In my opinion it's probably the best cover the Smashing Pumpkins have done. It was so good that radio stations play it even though it's a Bside and not an album song. I even saw in a Fleetwood Mac interview and the band said they were pleased with the song cover and said it's one of the best covers they have heard from a Fleetwood Mac song. "Dancing In The Moonlight" is a cover of a Thin Lizzy. Its a nice song, it's just a story about a boy walking outside at night and the feelings that go through his head. I would recommend the version called "Heart" since it has two covers of great songs on it.
The main song featured here is "Disarm" I am just in love with this song because it is the most powerful thing I have ever heard. The lyrics are powerful and the music is also powerful. It's basically a song about a young boy growing up and the pressures and pains he has to face as he grows up into the world becoming a man.............
"I used to be a little boy.......... So old in my shoes................ And what I choose is my choice............. What's a boy supposed to do?.............The killer in me is the killer in you.............. My love?.............. I send this smile over to you." The lyrics just send chills all over my body.
It also has another meaning as many of us feel pressures in the world and sometimes feel like going insane yet we "disarm" ourselves from the bad feelings and go on to try to live peacefully. Many of the columbine shooters should listen to this song, it's basically about them. These kids face tough things in life and unfortunately go the wrong way and do that wrong thing. It would be best of they would "Disarm" themselves. The line "Disarm You With A Smile" means alot because its saying that if you smile at someone or are nice to someone, it might make them happy enough that the'll forget about doing something bad because they know someone will care about them. Also, the music also greatly compliments the lyrics. There are bells and guitars and a whole string section in the song. The violins build up in a powerful fashion and take you along for the emotional ride.
Check this song out sometime..... this is what the lead singer Billy Corgan had to say about it....... " I wanted a song about my messed up childhood.... And rather then have an angry, angry, angry violent song I'd thought I'd write something beautiful and make them (my parents) realize what tender feelings I have in my heart, and make them feel really bad for treating me bad. Disarm's hard to talk about because people will say to me "I listen to that song and I can't figure out what it's about." It's like about things that are beyond words. I think you can conjure up images and put together phrases, but it's a feeling beyond words and for me it has a lot to do with like a sense of loss. Being an adult and looking back and romanticizing a childhood that never happened or went by so quickly in a naive state that you miss it."
