| jps246's Full Review: Travel & Leisure Magazine |
Written for the well-to-do and jet-set travelers among us, Travel & Leisure magazine covers destinations (and the accompanying lifestyles) that vary from tropical island paradises no one has heard of to all American cities. While anyone with an interest in travel will probably find something to like and something useful, this magazine is definitely geared for those of us with plenty of disposable income who want only the best when they vacation.
The Basics
Travel & Leisure is published 12 times a year, each month. A one-year subscription directly from the publisher costs $22.50 while an issue on the newsstand will cost you $4.50.
Each issue has several standard sections including a note from the Editor, letters from readers, a travel log, a review of what is available on the magazines website, a quick list of good deals on vacations, and a short collection of biographies for the issues contributors. The good deals section is helpful and useful with information on discount or value vacations that are available. Because of the printing schedule though the information can only be so timely.
Beyond the standard sections, Travel & Leisure also includes reports which is a monthly collection of various news stories from around the travel and leisure world. Nothing youll find in here is earth shattering news, but as a collection of tidbits, reports is an enjoyable read that can provide you with some conversation starters or some ideas for your next trip.
The next section includes the cover articles along with the other major stories of the issue. These stories all obviously have something to do with travel and leisure, but the topics and stories can vary from issue to issue and even in each issue. Article topics have included New York Citys Meatpacking District, shopping in Honolulu, going cross country on a train, and places to find American Art Deco to name a few.
Rounding out the rest of the magazine, the update section contains dispatch, tech, strategies and this just in. These are quick reviews of what you would expect in with each title. Dispatch includes short new stories like the tightening security situation in Washington DC, while tech reviews new gadgets and electronics that are available. Strategies looks at various travel and leisure topics and the best way to go about doing them and finally this just in covers breaking news stories and the like. Finishing the magazine is Just Back, which is a last page story on someone just back from a vacation.
Hows it read
Anyone interested in traveling and enjoying their leisure time can probably find something of interest in Travel & Leisure. The magazine covers a variety of topics and stories, but almost all are written from the perspective of well-to-do travelers and people in general. Not everyone has the money to travel to France to taste the finest wines or visit a remote resort in the middle of a rain forest and this is what makes Travel & Leisure a bit inaccessible to many people. Its always nice to dream about stuff like this, but to get a monthly magazine that focuses solely on this can be a bit overwhelming and intimidating for those of us of lesser means.
If you are one of those lucky people who have the money and time to enjoy all of the finer things in life, then Travel & Leisure is probably a great addition to your magazine rack. The magazine introduces plenty of new and interesting trip ideas, along with plenty of ways to enjoy spending your money.
Final Thoughts
For people with normal means, Travel & Leisure is a magazine thats an enjoyable diversion and a wish list of places we want to go and things we want to do. For those with the means, Travel & Leisure is a good guide to the finer points in travel and in leisure.
If you're looking for ideas to save money or looking to plan vacations on a budget, steer instead over to Budget Travel, a magazine that takes into mind the fact that not all of us have unlimited resources when it comes to our vacationing budget.
So for most of us, an issue here and there is probably enough, but for others, a subscription is a worthwhile and interesting use of time (and eventually money).
