Please watch the show before reviewing... (Reply to this comment)

"Fox has simply taken the concept behind Pokemon, changed the first four letters, and created a new show. Can they do this?"
Fox didn't. Toei Animation did. This is part of a larger genre in anime.
"Digimon are weird monsters with weird names that emerge from stone tokens to fight one another."
The Digimon live in their own world naturally. There are no stone tokens.
"The Digimon show is about a group of kids trying to navigate and master the world of Digimon."
Save, actually. They don't live there, and they only go there during emergencies.

Are you like 8 years old? By the way, I think someone plaguerized this epinion (not you, someone copied your work, not the other way around). Psyonik, I think you should look into this. Someone is violating the termns of agreement. By the way, Digimon first copied Tamagotchi, and then when Pokemon the show came out they copied the show. Digimon itself doesn't copy Pokemon, but the show does. Devastator, I think that you should realize that being a fan and being rational are two different things. Just read the other comments. It seems that your up against just about everyone.

I do know a bit about programming Geek! Not enought to sit down and programn the skeletal 1989 version of pokemon. The Truth is that your basing your time frame on one programmer, YOU. You need to realize that nintendo has a TEAM of programmers working on EACH part of the game. The fact is all nintendo had in 1989 was a concept and a rough outline for how the battle system was going to work, they couldn't program much more than that because nintento pulled the plug on the project. Later, when the game was picked back up it had to be re-programmed to work with the Gameboy Color who is to say that nintendo didn't throw in a hundred or so extra characters. In this case you dont need characters before you have attacks because they all use the same hundred or so attacks anyway. The point is not to prove that pokemon copied Digimon, but that Digimon did not copy pokemon. That is my Quest. The fact is, in order to add extra characters you just need a good artist with plenty of ideas. And once Again this forum is for comments about the SHOW, which is much better than the orange islands Pokemon mini-series that kids WB is broadcasting whenever they don't feel like playing re-runs. I wonder how you feel about card captors, as this seems to be even more of a ripoff than any other show to date. That's about it for todays Devastation, look for me too come back soon.......Veeeeery sooooooon......Mwahahahahahahaaaaaaa....

Do you know anything about programming, Devastator? (Reply to this comment)
by jetstudio
Excuse me, Devestator, but do you know anything about programming? I know many programming languages (C, C++, Pascal, Omega) and I know for a fact that you can't just go back and change everything. Did you know that if Nintendo did, that it would take about ten years to get finished? Huh? Did you? Also, Nintendo came up with the monsters first, because they had to program them into the game in...1989!!! You can't write a line of code without pre-calling the descriptive evaluator mode processor. (In English, this means that you need the character before programming moves, graphics, and such) Learn programming before you go off talking about things that you don't understand. Oh, and the reason why Nintendo never sued Bandai? Bandai is considered a tiny, pitiful company in contrast to the huge corporate offices of NIntendo which span the world! Nintendo executives probably consider Bandai a small, un-intelligent rip-off developing company, so they don't even bother to sue them!

Wrong again! Even if pokemon started development in 1989 IT DOESN'T MATTER the game was released in 1995, FOUR YEARS after Digimon. That means that Nintendo had four years to sit back and get Ideas. Have you seen Shellmon and Snimon? I bet the boys at Nintendo did before they created Slowbro and Scyther. There is no defense for Nintendo. Digimon came first. The show, the toys and the little Digimon games all came out in 1991 while Pokemon was on the shelf at Nintendo. There was no chance for Digimon to copy pokemon, because pokemon did not exist until 1995 and I bet Bandai could prove that In a court of law if they had to, and that's why pokemon can't sue any of the makers of these so called "Ripoffs" Because they would lose. (Monster Rancher occured in 1993 so they beat Pokemon too if anyone wants to know!) The whole point is that Digimon is not a ripoff of Pokemon.

You first two commenters are not right at all. I am a devout video-game and electronics follower, and I know for a fact that Nintendo was developing Pokemon in 1989. Yes, 1989. The project was pushed off the shelf, however, after big corporate guys at Nintendo decided to not release it, at least for a while. And for six years it sat there....In 1990, Tamagotchi came out in Japan, creating a frenzy. People everywhere rushed to buy those virtual pets. A while later, the "Digimon" rip-off of Tamagotchi came along. After the virtual pet craze finally subdued, Shigeru Myamoto, Nintendo's top game designer, came along and decided to revive Pokemon, after learning of the programming codes. It was a slightly old game, but with a bit of re-programming (the saving capability) Pokemon was released in Japan, creating another craze. The makers of Digimon, angry that their Tamagotchi rip-off had failed miserably, decided to change the entire story of Digimon, making it into an idea that was nearly identical to the Pokemon show. Japanese ignored the stupid Digimon stuff, and Pokemon continued to grow. Then, the shows both debuted in the US. As in Japan, most Americans (many avid gamers like myself) recognized Digimon as a rip-off, and we gamers who knew of Pokemon's original programming in 1989 just laughed at the ridiculous Digimon show. FOX ought to feel really pathedic. They can't make a good show...they have to copy other peoples' hard work. And that, my friends, is the true story.

I agree, but you might be giving FOX too much credit. (Reply to this comment)

I've written several novelizations of Digimon, so I totally agree with you that the show is different, and in some ways superior to Pokemon. I also didn't know that Digimon came first--thanks for telling us! It's funny, when you actually read the script, the writing is SO Japanese, with all the cultural differences. The Fox "translators" Americanize the scripts heavily.
It's good to know that Digimon came before Pokemon in Japan, but knowing Fox as I do, I'm sure THEY jumped on the bandwagon.
Which makes them pretty smart business people, no?

DIGIMON IS NOT A POKEMON RIP-OFF!! (Reply to this comment)
by Myotisgal
I am sick of people saying that Digimon is a Pokemon rip-off!! If anyone would care to do their Japanese homework they would cleary see that Digimon was realesed in Japan in 1991! And then Monster Rancher was released in 1993!! Pokemon was not introduced to Japan until 1995!!! So don't judge 2 quickly!!! Pokemon just came 2 America first!!!
Sincerely,
Myotisgal. (Yes, like the bad guy off Digimon.)

Brilliant yes, Sickening ripoff of Pokemon NO. (Reply to this comment)
by Devastater
When evaluating Digimon Vs Pokemon you must first consider their point of origin JAPAN. Digimon toys and virtual pets were released FIRST, that's right FIRST. Pokemon and Digimon both came up with their concepts based on those cute-but-so-easily-forgotten virtual pets called Tamogotchis. Digimon however was the first to suggest the idea of having the little kritters duke it out. Pokemon followed suit (the truth hurts doesn't it) Digimon do not "emerge" from anything, they walk around all the time (I think you've been watching a bit of Monster Rancher, another Monster Anime. Rancher's Monsters are called from "Mystery discs" and they become lost/unusable discs when they die) And one more thing, thekids don't want to "master the Digi-world" they just want to go home, but in order to go home safely they must defeat the "evil Digimon" because events that affect the digital world, also affect the real world.
