| tucaman's Full Review: Rowenta Steam Generator DG050 Iron |
Ok, so heres my story, my wife and I decided that actually earning money for a living was too easy, so we bought a business. This was a local Dry Cleaning and Laundry location. Over the next couple of years, we learned a whole lot about many things, but mostly I loved having everything I wore professionally cleaned and pressed.
I will tell you the secret to great looking clothes, drapes, table clothes, or almost anything, is STEAM! In the cleaning plant there is a huge boiler that for 10s of thousands of dollars makes your dress pants look nice. SShhhh
.guess what? For around $150 you can do the same thing at home.
While running the business we needed a portable steam generator for hanging drapes. Some of the professional drape steamers are really expensive. While in the fabric store my wife came across the Rowenta Iron. You know how every once in a while you make a purchase that you look back and think, WOW, that was a great moment in my life. Well the Rowenta is one of those moments for me.
- STEAM -
The Rowenta has more than outdone itself. We were able to easily take this iron with us when we went to hang drapes for our clients. It has the ability to shoot out a steam 18-24 inches. The iron can handle steaming out any creases in the drapes while they are already hung. It has the ability to shoot the steam out at any angle.
This iron is also very practical for home use. Drape touchups are a snap. A slight wrinkle in a dress can be touched up on a hanger. A slightly crumpled suit can be steamed to look fresh.
The Rowenta steam iron has an independent small boiler that lasts and lasts. It holds approximately 4 cups of water. We can use the iron for 30-60 minutes depending on the volume of steam needed. When the steam runs out it is only an 8 minute wait (at the most) for you to be back up and running.
-FLAT IRONING-
The Rowenta is a fabulous flat iron. It has the ability to put in a professional crease. This iron was one that we used as a backup if we got overloaded on the regular irons in the cleaners, and I tell you what, this iron works every bit as well as a professional grade boiler powered iron.
After a while, we got tired of working all of the time in a literal sweat shop and we sold the cleaners. Man did I miss professionally cleaned clothes. L. The only thing we took with us was
..guess what
..the Rowenta. We are picky on how our clothes look and this iron can give us the professional look we like without the expense of a professional cleaner. Not to mention it works at 2 am and on Sundays for church.
This iron also can handle silk and other delicate fabrics because it is putting out steam and not heat. You still could damage the material if you arent careful but with a light touch and gentle steam you can iron most materials. We have yet to find a material that we arent able to handle with this iron. Because this iron is a boiler it doesnt spit out water droplets like a heat iron with a steam feature. This iron can also handle wool items with just light steam and they iron quickly and easily
-PROS-
Affordable and able to give a professional look without the hassle of going to the cleaners. This iron is dependable- if you clean the boiler portion every couple of months you will have very little trouble with the performance of the iron. We have owned our iron for 6 years now and have had very few issues. Because the iron has a boiler the flat surface is relatively cool to the touch. (It can burn a surface or shirt if left for an extended period of time, Im not sure exactly how long that takes but conservatively more like a half hour or greater till there is a problem with a light burn stain- When we first started using this iron my wife did lightly burn the surface of an ironing board because a professional iron can be left flat on the board and this one needs to be put on its base.) The thing is pretty tough as well. We traveled with it all over with the business and it dropped on the pavement and on the cement floor on a few occasions. I will confess that my iron handle does have a little duct tape from a particularly vicious accident, but I promised my wife I would never ever leave it on the tailgate of the truck again. . I have considered throwing my iron out the roadway once more, but only so that I can justify upgrading to the newer model that Rowenta has put out. The stupid thing seems to last forever.
-CONS-
Even though I have talked about how affordable this is, it is still $150+ for an iron. When you can buy a simple iron for $20 it can be hard to justify, but I tell you once you have tried this iron you will find it is money well spent. For someone who likes to do craft project the lack of heat in the iron surface can be a problem. This iron cannot handle iron-on decals, heating craft items- such as melting beads, or iron on interfacing. (It can put on the interfacing but not very well, it definitely needs to be sewed in place afterwards.) This part is all from my wife because I dont even know what interfacing is. In all honesty the cons are relatively small in relation to the quality of this product.
I guess they only thing I can leave you with is this; Permanent Press DOES NOT mean you dont have to iron you clothes. Grab yourself a Rowenta and look as good as you deserve to.
