| h2c911sc's Full Review: Estro Barista |
Well, after 6 years of almost daily use with my Proteo Espresso machine, it was time to replace it with the same Starbucks Barista machine. These robust espresso machines are made in the same Italian factory only 6 years apart. Back then there were only two finishes available, white or black. Now these machines are available in Copper, Brushed Chrome, a compliment of primary colors as well as black and white to match or compliment any kitchen or room decor. In the 6 year, from the almost daily use (Three espresso drinks in the morning and at least two in the evening)the initial machine served me well. I had to replace the black rubber seal twice and on a regular basis sat in front of the TV with a push pin pushing out the coffee resin build up in the filter. During this time, I learned to properly grind and pack the coffee grounds into the portafilter. Incidentally, I have gone through two Krups burr grinders in this time. Note, stay away from the inexpensive blade grinders as they do not grind the coffee fine enough or consistently enough for espresso. It's been said that the blade grinders distort the flavor of the coffee from the friction produced in beating the beans around.
These machines are heavy in weight,a gust of wind won't blow it off of your counter and usually is a good means of determining a appliance's build quality. These machines with routine maintenance will last as long or longer than mine. If you have problems with your machine, a call to Starbucks 800 service line will have parts to your door within a couple of days.
With daily maintenance and cleaning, the only thing I've noticed on my machine was the chrome finish wearing off of the steam nozzle tip (brass is showing) and the screened instruction icons coming off next to the on/off button and the steam and brew buttons.
The reason I am replacing my machine is to get the new Barista machine in Stainless to coordinate with the newly renovated kitchen.
Some Starbucks stores will occasionally get factory refurbished Barista machines at greatly reduced prices. I've seen them here in several Seattle stores. Same great machine, but re-packed in plain brown boxes however color choices are limited.
