About GE items - I have always felt the same way about most of their products, except those from "way back when"... when everyone seemed to make more quality items, ones that would last forever. (In fact, I'm STILL using a GE refrigerator that's around _45_ years old, if you can believe it! It was a very expensive one in its day and it still serves us well!)
Anyway, in spite of the fact that they used to make quality items, for the most part I, too, would stay away from GE products. Until a couple of years or so ago when I took the chance and bought a small GE microwave that's been absolutely great. Since then I've accumulated several more items and surprisingly, have been pleased with them all! My faith in GE has cautiously been restored - at least to a certain degree... though I can't say they're a favorite brand just yet, I do have some favorite items with their brand name on them! Big-ticket items, on the other hand, I'd probably stay away from.... :)
Kind of late in reading it, but this was really a nice review!

You're very right-- GE isn't a brand I'd ever buy. Unfortunately, the house I bought came with GE appliances; I didn't purchase them myself. So one by one I'm replacing them!

Hang in there and keep saving your pennies! And watch for sales at Sears. From what I understand, Sears is in pretty deep financial trouble, and will be trying to "unload" as much of their higher-priced inventory as possible. So more than likely, they're be having good (and frequent)sales on items like the Maytag.

Never buy anything with the letters GE on it. I kept learning the hard way, until it finally dawned on me that I could not trust GE, from the phones to any other electrical appliance. It may be cheaper initially, but in the long run, it is NOT!

It has all of the really wonderful features that I would love to have. Right now though, we just can't afford a new one. We recently bought our home and I'm not working. I'll have to keep in mind this dishwasher though when we are ready to replace our GE potscrubber.
