djsplendid's Full Review: NBA Live 2001 for PlayStation 1
By far, the top rated sports games are done by Electronic Arts. That’s why when searching for a basketball game I naturally, without thinking grabbed NBA Live 2001. I knew, by the standard they set for last years best basketball game I wouldn’t be disappointed.
After a simple install, you have 6 options to choose from. Exhibition, Season, Playoff, One on One, Franchise and Multiplayer. Exhibition is just a one timer. You can choose any teams you want to play with and against (up to 4 players if you have a 4 player adapter).
Season mode allows you to pick a team you want to try to take to the finals and control their destiny. You can arrange the leagues in any fashion you want. Choose a 25, 56 or full 82 game season, conduct a full player draft, set trade deadlines and even have the computer randomly offer trades. Then you get to play games, simulate games make trades (up until the deadline if it’s set) and have a ton of fun. Who knows, if you’re good enough you might just win the trophy!
Playoff mode allows you to skip the season and just play the always thrilling season ender. Choose any teams(s) you would like to control, set the amount of games to be played and you’re in for some real computer addiction.
One on one might bring ya back a little bit. You can use any of the current NBA players or take a step back into time and rock the old school players like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird
Franchise Mode allows you to build the NBA’s next dynasty. This mode has you build a team through the draft, make trades and pick up new players through free-agency during and between seasons (you play multiple seasons) all while trying to keep your team under the salary cap! Got what it takes to take your team to the top each season? If you think you do, give this mode a try!
Now on to the fun, fun, fun stuff. Multiplayer mode. So you’re tired of playing the same old friends, and you’re bored of playing the computer all the time. You need something new, something more challenging. Hop online at easports.com and and play against people from all over the world. Online!! Connect with a friend or total stranger via modem or direct IP. Once you get it all set up launch the game, wait for both players to be connected and get you game on!! (Warning) If you have a dial up or are playing someone with a dial up, be prepared to lag, and very hard. If you can deal with the lag then more power to ya, but it is extremely hard to play when the game skips over a slow connection) DSL or Cable is recommended.
Gameplay
This is the best part of the game in my opinion. At first it can be a bit confusing (the buttons) but after a game or two, you’ll get the hang of it and as Stuart Scott says “Waiter, my tray” (for hitting the 3 pointers) and “Boooo-Yah” (when you throw down a monster dunk). NBA Live 2001 also now offers more controlled play in the low post. Choose from a variety of moves when you back anyone down in the low post area. Choose from a jump hook, fade-away jump shot, spin move to the basket or an up and under. Before you know it, you’ll have Kobe throwing Shaq alley-oops, Tim Hardaway raining three-pointers and Jason Williams faking passes in the lane and scoopin layups for two!
This game is fun, fun, fun! I downloaded the demo at gamespy.com and purchased it about a week ago at Wal-Mart for $19.99. I’m already 1/3rd the way through my season and I’ve only had it for about 5 days. Pretty addicting if I do say so myself. Definitely worth the $49.99 it was priced at when released and MOST definitely worth the $19.99 it’s available for now.
Graphics, wow, I don’t know how to explain other then Incredible. Players actually LOOK like the players in real life, the arena’s look the same, people on the sideline aren’t flat and 2D, they’re 3D and they look like people who actually attend the games! You really must see it to believe it.
