East Front II transforms the spirit of the classic wargame, PanzerBlitz, into a PC based environment. The graphics are large and attractive and have a nice miniatures feel. The interface is reasonably intuitive although the use of the control key for a move/fire toggle is less than helpful. (It's not bad if you reprogram a mouse key to effect this toggle.) Like most computer wargames, the AI is not very bright and can be easily defeated. If you're choosing the game solely for solo play, it is probably going to be a disappointment. Where the game really shines is in multiplayer play. It's very stable over the net and allows players to place time limits on moves, so that it is possible to play a tense and exciting game over the net in an evening. It also has a very easy to use play be e-mail mode as well. One of the great difficulties in translating the PanzerBlitz system to play-by-mail (or PBEM) is in configuring opportunity fire. East Front II solves this problem by creating extremely customizable opfire rules that can be applied globally or on a unit-by-unit basis. This creates a good degree of control of forces during the opponent's turn.
Another plus for the game is the multiplicity of user created scenarios over the net. This combined with the over 150 scenarios included on the CD means that it is easy to find scenarios of every size and covering most all types of tactical engagements on the eastern front.
