moloko's Full Review: Perfect Dark for Nintendo 64
Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64 is indeed a great game for a system that is in desperate need for some good games right now. Rare has delivered in all levels of gameplay that Goldeneye had in PD. It has great music, improved graphics, decent concept and story. But I do have my little problems with the game.
The music in this game is great. It helps create the futuristic espionage feel in the game. There really is not much more I can say about the music. PD has actual speech compared to the text only of Goldeneye...so it adds to the game giving the character personality.
Now the graphics....the graphics have improved, not dramatically, but it is noticeable. And the FPS (Frames Per Second) has greatly improved also thanks to the Nintendo Expansion Pak. The motion is much more smooth than compared to Goldeneye. Now in some areas the FPS does slow down, like when playing Co-Op mode (You and a human/computer player play together in mission mode), Counter-Op mode (You playing against a human player in mission mode) and having 4 human players and 8 simulants (bots) in multiplayer mode. But other than that the FPS is fine.
The game itself in mission mode is very cool. You go from sneaking into a skyscraper to sneaking around Air Force 1 to breaking in to Area 51, so you can see the levels have much variety. One or two levels seem a little small though like the Chicago level and the G5 Building level. A problem that I found in mission mode is that you can't seem to sneak up the bad guys that much like you could on Goldeneye. I personally liked to sneak up on guys...but I find that you really can not do that much in PD. I have come to points in the game in which a bad guy has his back turned to me and all of the sudden knows I am there without me alerting him in any way.
Multiplayer mode has many added goodies compared to Goldeneye's mode. There are now new scenarios to play on like King of The Hill, that is where one player or a team control a certain area for a specific amount of time. Or you can play Capture the Briefcase mode, which is basically like Capture the Flag. You capture the case from the opponents base and take it to yours while trying to protect your case. There is also the addition of simulants which are computer controlled opponents for multiplayer. One or two of the new multiplayer levels are lacking in good design but most are pretty good.
One thing I must say though...when you put PD on its hardest level setting for mission mode...the game becomes much more fun...but much more difficult...even more so than Goldeneye on it's hardest setting.
The story of the game...is a little...well...not very well done...but I guess I will not go into detail for those who want to be surprised by the story so I won't ruin it for you.
Make sure you own an expansion pak if you buy this game because if you do not own one...you will not be able to play that much of this game. If I remember correctly you will only have 35% of the game available to you if you do not own the pak...so get one.
Overall Perfect Dark is a great game. It has its small flaws but the flaws are not big enough to ruin the overall game itself. It is a given that if you loved Goldeneye you will love Perfect Dark. So go out and get your copy of it today.
