I've read some bad reviews about Suretrade but I've been an account holder for over two years and have made numerous trades without any of the problems that people have written about. When I first opened an account with Suretrade, there were some problems with the web page speed and customer service but these initial problems have been resolved.
I attempted to make a trade and got a blank screen once. I was worried that my trade wouldn't go through. I immediately logged off and called the customer service number, waited about 7 or 8 minutes and talked to a broker. The broker executed the trade and it ended up being at a better price than I would have had at the time I originally attempted to trade. This was potentially a devastating problem if I was trying to get in and out of a deal quickly.
Although you can get investment research at numerous locations on the net, Suretrade offers a comprehensive research package of their own. You have access to numerous options including, unlimited real-time quotes, and a news service that I find particularly useful, In-Play. In-Play is provided by Briefing.com and offers up-to-date coverage of stocks that are "in-play" on a particular day. I use this as I'm screening stocks that I might want to purchase. Recently Suretrade added the ability for their customers to invest in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) and trade with their Palm Pilot or other wireless service.
I recommend Suretrade to anyone who is looking to get their feet wet in the market. If you make a mistake you can get out and you won't waste money on large commissions (half of what E-Trade charges). There is no minimum initial investment so you can put a couple hundred dollars in and start investing.
One other thing... I recommend choosing an online broker that has a real bank behind them, not just an internet company. I am much more comfortable with SureTrade because they are subsidiary of FleetBoston Financial (NYSE:FBF).
Happy Investing!
