I banked with Norwest Banks of Minnesota for 8 years & all was fantastic! When Wells Fargo bought out the Norwest banks the NIGHTMARE began!!! A sorted of different occurrences took place. To sum it up in one story the 8-year relationship ended when they Literally robbed me in the area of $800.00 to $1000.00! I tried to have confronted them on these events but NO RESPONSE! I bite the loss and went to WingSpanbank.com! The best as far as banks!

The overdraft fee is not $30.00 per day. There is an overdraft fee (usually $25.00)and then there is another fee called a continuous overdraft fee. This is assessed when an account is negative for an extended period of time.(usually 1-2 weeks). There is no excuse for having your account negative for this amount of time. If people would'nt write checks for money they don't have, no fees would ever be assessed. THANKS

You are correct greenspj. Wells overdraft fee is usually $25.00, not $30.00.This is a little above standard but only by about 3 dollars. Besides, overdraft fees should be higher at all banks. If people dont have any money they shouldnt be writing checks. Dont write write checks for money that isnt there and you will never have an overdraft fee

Wells is not the same (Reply to this comment)

In february, 2000 wells fargo bank may have had hidden charges in their "Free Checking Account". However today, in January of 2001 this account really is free. There is a fee for usuing another bank's ATM, but this is industry standard practice.
The New "Wells Fargo Bank N.A." is nothing like the old "Wells Fargo and Co" that existed in feb. of 2000. It is a completely new company.
This new Wells Fargo Bank is committed to customer service. For assistance with WFB account call (800) 235-2265. For the loan express center call (800) 266-7937
NORWEST ROCKS!!

I disagree entirely with your opinion. I have had only excellent experiences with Wells Fargo. Fees charged generally have to do with account balances. They have widespread ATM coverage in the west. My experiences with the telephone contact has been excellent.
Fees can be high anywhere depending on your view of what services you want and get. All banks, as well as any business, must make money or they won't remain in business. Nobody is perfect all the time. Sorry for your bad experience but most people I have talked with say that Wells Fargo has been at least average or much better than most.

Take some responsibility for customer service (Reply to this comment)
by ssb1
I have worked for a larger regional bank and a small community bank. In both you have employees whom are less than adequate... However you will also find exceptional employees as well... and I would argue many more exceptional employees in the larger company...

The key is finding a person in a bank..and get to know them...Yes this can be accomplished in a big bank. I now work for a large bank in a corporate function and everyone of us.... from the secretary to the manager act as a liason for friends/family who need assistance in finding the right place to go for banking service...If you don't know a sole in the banking industry... introduce yourself to the branch manager, the supervisor of the teller line, the local loan officer... or perhaps getting the name of the person at the 1-800 line and asking for the person each and every time you need assistance.... Never be shy about asking for a supervisor...if an employee isn't providing acceptable customer service.. don't you think the supervisor wants to know... and he /she will most likely solve your problem

Banking is not what it used to be... but neither is the world we live in.. I doubt I need to identify the changes over the lase 15 years.... however instead of hating the big bank...if you learn to work with its organizational structure.. you might just benefit from superior technology, great products, easy access to your money and competitive interest rates. . My insider knowledge of a community bank and a large bank... I would choose the large bank everyday... even if they charge me a $1 a month to use the ATM.

One last comment..banks just like all for profit businesses operate for the benefit of our shareholders(not the customer)... the fees, interest rates, are designed to meet the expectation of our owners.. If you think a bank's fees are too high.. perhaps you should buy the stock... go buy a few shares of WF and in the long run, my bet is you will make your $1 ATM fee back.

Is there more than one Wells Fargo? (Reply to this comment)
by sprint_sucks
Are we banking at the same bank?

I have not experienced any of the problems you have, and it's kind of disappointing. I did leave Wells Fargo once (when I got laid off and didn't have checks coming in direct deposit and they wanted to start charging me for checking), but after six months at Washington Mutual, I realized the error of my ways.

In case it's a regional difference, I'm in Southern California, though I also had great experiences with them in Washington State after they bought First Interstate.

Here's my Wells Fargo review.

nope the overdraft fee is like $30 a day. I overdrew with the stupid debit card and they did not tell me until I got my statement. I deposited a check 3 days before.

Well written opinion... (Reply to this comment)
by Arthur.Rubin, Arthur.Rubin is an Advisor on Epinions in Personal Finance
but I don't think your numbers are corect. I'm pretty sure my bounced check fee is only $25; still exorbitant, but near the industry standard. The $1/month fee is for POS (Point of Service) use, rather than for ATM usage.

I have had little trouble with customer service (remember to hit * as soon as you've identified your account, to get a real person...they don't tell you about that until you're about 6 levels down in the menu system).

Of course, my account is grandfathered from First Interstate, and some of the fees and rates are also grandfathered.

Still HR, as the numbers may be correct for your (former) account, and may vary from state to state.

Try BOFA (Reply to this comment)

Try Bank of America for the highest fees for overdraft...

Paying 1 buck a month to use your own bank's ATM machines is too much. I always thought Wells Fargo was not much different from BOFA. Your article proves it.

I will agree with you that Wells Fargo does on occasion lack customer service. I have been banking with Wells Fargo since 1994 and have no reason to complain. I've been with other banks while still with Wells and have had nothing but problems with the other banks.
From reading your web site to see what your problem is with the bank, it just seems that you are partly the cause of the problems with the bank. I am sorry about the collections notice with your Savings account. I do believe that was the bank's fault, but other than that, the rest of your complaints don't seem to hold water. It just seems that once something bad happens you're not willing to give a second chance. Forgiveness and second chances is what life's all about. Try them again, see if they are still lousy, if they are, then hold the grudge, otherwise, just get over it.

Jeff,

Thanks for your article! It's a great help
for me 'cause I'm contemplating of trans-
ferring my checking account from BoA to
another bank. I'm been with BoA since '84
and I'm not happy with them anymore. So
much... You know how big banks are.

Thanks again and regards to your family!
