I enrolled in the College Express Checking Account last summer so that I would have some place to deposit my money that I earned from working. I signed up for the account and the people were very nice to me, and since it was my first checking account, they helped me out with everything.
For this particular account you are limited to ATM transactions, which didn't bother me because I didn't think I would need any teller transactions. And I was right. Using only the atm, however, brought up some unknown fees. Primarily, when I would use non First Union ATM's, whichever bank's ATM it was would charge me $1.50 or $1.75 (whatever the fee was) to use their ATM. In addition, to that First Union would tack on a dollar. That's almost $3 every time I want to get my money from a non-First Union ATM.
I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. I would recommend this particular account if you have many First Union branches in your area or you will be confining your banking to one particular ATM in your neighborhood. If you will be roaming around a lot, not on the First Union network, you might as well shop around for another account, because $3 per account access from a non First Union ATM is harsh.
