| JWan's Full Review: Discover Card |
I see a lot of notes about this card's high interest rates, but I don't see many comments about their fantastic online banking capabilities, so I thought that needed some coverage.
I signed up for a Discover Card several years ago. Being new to the world of credit cards, I was lured in by the promises of cash back. My spending habits always revolve around paying my balances in full, so I generally just ignore whatever random number they happen to assign to my APR (In actuality it is quite high 16.99%). However, the benefits of a Discover Card greatly outweigh it's drawbacks if you can manage to not carry a balance. I was also recently upgraded to a Discover Platinum, which has even better benefits, but you can go check their web site for more details.
Discover makes it very easy to make your payments without sending checks. Right on their site, they have a relatively painless set of steps that you need to take in order to mark a bank account as a payment source. All you have to provide is a little bit of information and you are up and running in roughly 24-48 hours. That is just the first piece of the pie.
Paying bills online is great, but what about checking your balances? I bank with a bunch of financial institutions and usually at odd hours. Discover is by far the best with regards to response time as well as site availability. Better than Wingspan, Wells Fargo, and First USA. It also feels like it has the cleanest interface. I can get to what I want in a single click or two. Note that it is the only site that requires me to enter my account number as a login ID. I happen to have my Discover Card number memorized, so that makes it pretty painless. It also allows you to sort transactions in several different ways making it easy for you to get the information that you need.
If online banking only required the use of a web site, Discover would already be doing well. However, there is more. Discover has fantastic integration with Quicken. Using Quicken's one-step update, I can auto download all of my outstanding Discover transactions and check my account balances without needing to login to the web site. This saves an enormous amount of time for anyone that uses Quicken.
(SIDENOTE: If anyone knows of any other credit cards that have this level of Quicken integration, drop me a note. I would LOVE TO KNOW!)
The cashback bonuses are discussed to death in the rest of this forum, so I'll skip a long discussion of them. To make a long story short, you get paid, and it's nice.
