a great status symbol, but service really doesn't follow suit. It really depends on who you get in the call center - on average - 8 times out of 10 they are very good, its the odd 2 or 3 times they don't follow up - but paying this fee it should be 10 out of 10.

Also, the perceived benefits arent really very many in the UK, e.g. film premieres etc.

Good review but a few notes are in order... (Reply to this comment)

1. Amex now charges $2,500 per year for the primary card holder and $1500 per year for additional members.

2. The bonus for spending at partner vendors (which include Ritz, Four Seasons, Neiman's and Saks among others) is now 100%. If you spend at lot at these vendors this bonus can go a long way towards making your membership fee worthwhile.

3. While the program only gets you guaranteed membership in partner airline Elite programs, you can often get a "competitive" upgrade to a similar program on another airline like United or American. This is usually done on a case by case basis and they ask you to fax or mail a copy of your most recent statement showing your Elite status. I did it with United several years ago and it worked like a charm. Note- you can do this whether you have the AMEX or not- but if you get Elite status on AMEX it's a good way to extend your range of airlines.

4. Re the "don't call them, they'll call you" statement- This is not correct. If you have spent and paid for at least $140,000 in charges in the past 12 months, have a perfect credit record with them, and have no major derogatories on your credit report (a 30 day late is ok, 90 is probably not) then by all means call them if you have not yet been invited but want to obtain the card. They will first check your spending and if you are over $140,000 (even though they generally require $150,00) they will put you through to Centurion Card Services to take the very brief application over the phone. It generally takes 3-5 business days for them to respond, a little longer if your credit is not 100% perfect. After you are approved it takes an additional 4-5 business days for your card package to arrive via UPS.
