| surferdude7's Full Review: RCA RC5215P DVD Player |
The RCA RC5215P DVD player has a built-in parental control. You can preprogram it to view programs rated G, PG, PG-13 and R. If you set it on G it will not play the PG, PG-13 and R rated movies. If you set it on PG-13 it will only play G, PG and PG-13 movies, I guess you get the picture. You can also lock the player so that it cannot be used at all.
If you have young children at home and would like for them to view a movie and the only thing keeping you from letting them view it is a nudity scene in the movie. Then this DVD player was made for you. You can cut up to six scenes out of the DVD movie so it will not play them while you are watching the movie. The DVD player will remember up to 20 DVDs for you to censor the way you wish.
The On-Screen Menu System is easy to use once you use it a couple of times, you can use your remote to make adjustments like sound, language and more. You can read the On-Screen Menu System in three languages, English, French or Spanish.
You can change the display on the front of the unit to Auto, Bright and Dim to suit your personal needs.
It is nice slim unit measuring 2 4/5" in height x 15" in width x 13 1/2" deep and weighs 11.60 pounds.
Features
A 10-bit Video D/A Converter that delivers faster video signal processing.
Digital Dolby 5.1 surround sound and DTS (Digital Theater System) ready.
SRS TruSurround - This gives you a six-speaker sound through two speakers.
It plays DVD movies and CD music with Random Playback CD.
A full function, easy to use remote control, it requires Two AA Batteries. (Included)
Other features are: Multi-Language & Subtitle Capability, Intelliseek Scan Modes, Multiple Viewing Angle Capability, Scene Again Instant Replay and Multi-Language/ Subtitle Capability.
The Connections
One-Component Video Output (Best for Video)
One-S-Video Output (Great video, Component is slightly better)
One-Composite Video Output (Use only if you do not have a Component or S-Video input.)
One-Stereo Audio Output
One-Optical Digital Output (Best for Audio)
Cons
There is no zoom feature, which is starting to appear on a lot of models.
There is no coaxial output, to get true Dolby 5.1 or DTS you will have to use the Optical Digital Output. (A fiber optic cable)
No headphone jacks.
Overall
Hookup is easy, one S-Video cable to your TV and one fiber optic cable to your Dolby 5.1 or DTS receiver. Now if your TV has a Component Video input, then run the three component cables instead of the S-Video cable. Component gives you your clearest picture and second is the S-Video hookup. Composite is your typical RCA jack hookup.
The retail price is $299, though you can find it for $249 to $189 if you just look around.
RCA delivers on quality when it comes to a DVD player.
Warranty is 90 days, which includes parts & labor and 91 days to one year, which includes parts only, you pay the labor. They may exchange a unit under the warranty.
The picture quality is crystal clear and the sound is like being at the movies. If you can live without the cons I have listed, then I highly recommend the RC5215P DVD player.
