| surferdude7's Full Review: Casio QV-2300 Digital Camera |
With the QV-2300UXPlus you can take 400 pictures in the best resolution of 1600 x 1200 and 1292 pictures in 800 x 600 resolution in the fine mode because it comes with the 340 MB IBM Microdrive. There is no need to buy an extra memory card with this camera. Now if you use the economy mode you can stretch out 2054 pictures in the 800 x 600 resolution and 943 pictures in the 1600 x 1200 resolution. You will have to replace your batteries before you fill up all the pictures.
You can also record up to 30 seconds of motion JPEG and it will store it as AVI movies. The AVI movies are in 320 x 240 resolution. You have a choice of 28 modes for your entire picture taking needs.
The Lens
It is a Macro lens with 9 glass elements in 7 groups and a 3x optical zoom lens plus a 4x digital zoom option. It has a F2.8 - F4.6 maximum aperture which is equivalent to 41 to 128mm on a 35mm camera.
Use the Auto focus Wide Angle from 10cm to infinity and 1cm to 30cm in macro mode. The Telephoto is from 50cm to infinity. The manual focus is from 2.4 inches to infinity.
The focusing modes are Contrast Detect TTL Auto focus, Manual focus, Macro mode, Infinity mode and Focus Lock mode.
The exposure modes are Program AE, Aperture Priority AE, Shutter Speed Priority AE and Manual. The exposure control is light metering by CCD with multi-pattern, spot and center weighted.
Shutter speeds are 60 seconds to 1/2000 second.
The filter size on the lens is 43mm.
Other Specifications
The QV-2300UXPlus is 2.11-megapixel.
A Built-in flash with four modes that include a Night Mode and Red Eye Reduction.
A 1.8" low-glare color Hyper Amorphous TFT color LCD with a refresh rate at 30fps.
On the back is a bright 1.8" HAST color LCD display with a refresh rate close to 30fps.
It has a CompactFlash Type II slot and accepts all CompactFlash cards and CF/2 devices. (340 MB IBM Microdrive)
It has a Built-in quartz digital clock with the date, time and calendar.
What you get
Here is a list of what comes with the camera.
1. USB cable and serial cable for the PC and for the Macintosh a serial adapter cable.
2. A video cable
3. 340 MB IBM Microdrive
4. A wireless remote control
5. Photo Loader software on CD
6. A soft case with two-way shoulder and hand strap plus a lens cap.
Pros
It comes with enough storage so you won't have to purchase another memory card. Included is the 340 MB IBM Microdrive.
Cons
It comes with four AA alkaline batteries, they should have included NiMH rechargeable batteries with a charger. I recommend getting at least an extra set so you will have a charged set on hand all the time.
One thing missing is an optical viewfinder, you have to take your pictures from the 1.8" color LCD.
There is no adjustment for backlight brightness on the 1.8" color LCD.
The zoom control is small and kind of awkward to operate.
One thing I don't like is having to view you pictures through a Java-enabled web browser like Explorer or Netscape.
Overall
This is a nice camera from Casio even though they did not include a viewfinder. It handles well and the picture quality is great.
There are several little cons that I have listed, if you can live with them then this is an excellent camera.
