| dinad's Full Review: Aiwa AM-C80 Personal MiniDisc Player |
First of all, let me make a confession: I am a gadget geek.
There, I said it.
Now then. A while ago I decided I needed a gadget fix. I was torn between an mp3 player, a cd burner (which, if I bought one, would also require a portable cd player), or a minidisc player. I did nearly a month of research, and decided to go with the minidisc platform. Because it's more flexible than mp3, and more portable (and more stable) than cds.
So, then, more research: who makes the best? the most cost-effective?
The bottom line is, I bought the Aiwa AM-C80. It was about $230, came with the car adapter kit and the optical cable. Not the rechargeable battery (which I bought from minidisco.com for $45). But it's soooo cool.
For one thing, it's tiny, about a 1/2 inch wider than a regular post-it note. For another thing, it's nearly idiot-proof: anytime you're editing a disc, it asks you to confirm your change. (I could see where this could get annoying, but I make enough mistakes to appreciate this feature). And it's very sturdy: ever try to run with a portable cd player? This thing has never skipped yet, and I've used it running, riding a bike, and while using a NordicTrak. Where most MDs I looked at use one or two buttons to edit discs, so that to get to the letter 'L' you have to hit the same button 12 times, the Aiwa uses a little jog wheel to spin around the alphabet. Sound quality is superb, I hear no difference between MD and CD. It's got a full-featured remote, too, so you can tuck it away without losing any of the features.
They're tough to find in stores, though; you've really got to do your homework. I bought mine from jandrelectronics.com, and have since discovered minidisco.com and planetminidisc.com as other bastions of the minidisc platform.
In short, if you're looking to trade up from your trusty cassette Walkman, go with a minidisc player. And if you're comparison shopping, go with THIS minidisc player.
