This college is a small liberal arts college, that until 3 years ago was called Sioux Falls College. If you attended the school now, you would soon discover that most residents of Sioux Falls still try to call it by its former name, not quite getting used to the "university" status change.
Other than the name, very little has changed in the school - it is a private, co-educational Christian institution, under the care of the American Baptist Church. It is open to students of all denominations, student attendance including daily time spent in chapel. The campus ministry program is one of the finest in the midwest.
The school was founded in 1883 and is the second-largest and oldest private university in the state of South Dakota. Located near downtown Sioux Falls, just blocks from the beautiful historic district, close to a major hospital, and convenient to bus routes and shopping.
However, housing near the campus is a bit of a problem, unless students live in the dormitories, as off-campus rentals when available, are snatched up quickly and often held onto for the full term of a student's enrollment.
The school offers majors in 30 + fields, as well as advanced programs in two Master's programs, and a degree-completion program for returning adult students. The school's location makes it ideal to serve the entire community of Sioux Falls, a city of 120,000, and cultural events, musical, drama, and athletic sports events that bring crowds from the whole city.
The college also serves the outer community, with programs for adult learners, as in the Center for Management, the Center for Women, the Assessment of Prior Learning, and the Degree Completion Program.
One of the finest theater facilities is located in the heart of the University campus, the Jeschke Fine Arts Center. It is the home of many enjoyable theatre productions, put on for the enjoyment of students, faculty, and Sioux Falls residents.
The beautiful big old buildings on the campus sit only about three blocks from the edge of the historic district, and add to the quaint flavor to the neighborhood. The campus sits in the heart of a quiet pleasant residential district, surrounded by beautiful older homes, and tree-lined streets, walking distance from Minnesota Avenue, the busiest street in the city, (the busiest street in the state of South Dakota, actually), where buses can take you anywhere downtown, to the malls, or to the parks that are spread throughout the city.
Sioux Falls is a fine city, with hardly any crime, and according to Money Magazine three years in a row, "the best place in America to live and raise a family."
Just one problem......there are no 'dunkin donut' shops......
