Although we are lowly college students, I don't think that we should constantly have to answer to the administration. I understand that certain precautions have to be taken in order to ensure the safety of the residents, but Panhellenic takes it way too far. I'm not certain that the rules in the other dorms are exactly the same, so I'll just present it as just being Panhellenic.
First of all, there are 4 floors to the building. The first floor contains the women's resource center, which is fairly isolated from the rest of the building. When you enter the building through the main entrance, you're put on the second floor. The second floor is the lobby. Panhellenic Hall is, unfortunately, the sorority dorm. All sorority meetings take place on the second floor, constantly taunting the non-sorority residents. The sorority girls are constantly singing and being noisy. Often, they sell t-shirts and sorority related items in the lobby, which causes huge crowds that keep the normal residents from being able to get through the lobby and to the stairs that we have to use to get up to our rooms. In my personal opinion, they should have a building designated to have sorority meetings so that the people who live in the real world can get on with their lives.
Second, we can't smoke in the rooms. When we filled out our housing applications, we had to specify whether or not we were smokers and whether or not we would mind having a smoker as a roommate. I don't see why adults going to college cannot smoke in their rooms, as long as we do it responsibly. We can't burn candles or incense, either. They're afraid we're going to catch something on fire. It's absolutely ridiculous.
Third, visitation. There are 4 resident advisors to cover the two floors with dorm rooms. Then there is an overall resident director. These people are there to make sure that the dorms aren't chaotic, that we're being respectful to those around us, and that we're following the rules. That's okay with me. I don't even mind the weekly room checks, although they are a bit intrusive. The RD, however, get 24 hour visitation rights. On weekdays, we can have visitors from 4 pm to 12 am. On weekends, 12 pm to 2 am. For any visitor, he or she must fill out a slip with his name, social security number, and address, along with the name, room, and phone number of the person that he or she is visiting. The slip has two pieces of paper, and you must fill out the time of arrival, tear off the top sheet, and place it in a box. When you're ready to leave, you fill out the time of departure on the other sheet and place it in the box. I think this is ridiculous.
The dorms are safe enough. In order to get in, we have to swipe a student ID card. Once we're in the lobby, we have to punch in a 3 digit code to open the door to get to the stairs. It's maximum security.
Oh, and grades. The RD has access to your grades. If you make below a certain GPA, the RD singles you out and has a talk with you about your grades. And it's mandatory that you meet with her for the talk.
As far as the rooms go, they're pretty nice. There's a lot of closet and drawer space, and you can arrange the beds any way that you'd like. Community bathrooms and showers. There's an oven and refrigerator on the 3rd and 4th floor and a washer and dryer on the 4th floor. There are a few vending machines on the 3rd floor as well.
Overall, I really hate this dorm. But I can't afford to get an apartment and it's the best that I can do with the money that I have. You really get to know the people on your floor, though, and I've made a handful of friends from the experience.
