| LiveActionHero's Full Review: Macmillan BlackICE Defender Full Version for PC (1... |
As a long time user and investor or many software products, I have been studying firewall protection and security type softwares. I currently have 3 computers in operation at all times, one is on 56k modem, one on ADSL, and one one cable modem. I love the high speed access of ADSL & cable modems and because of where I live, rain has a tendency to knockout the telephone lines so I lose two systems,(56k & ADSL) where the cable is very rarely interrupted.
I have come across 2 excellent software firewall protection systems, one is BlackIce Defender, available to download and get updates from the internet, the other is called ZONEALARM 2.0., also with available online updates. I have been playing with both of these protection systems, as example I have one type on one system, one type on another, and both operating together on my cable modem. BlackIce Defender is excellent and easy to operate. I recommend that you set it at the "paranoid" level for maximum protection against snoops and hackers looking to enter your system. The nice thing about BlackIce Defender is that when you get "pinged" your Icon for BlackIce Defender,in the taskbar tray will start flashing, and you can see what just happened, the program is time/day stamped, it gives you what they were trying to do and their "IP" address. Now you can turn around and send a copy off to your and their internet service provider for disciplinary action and if you keep a long running history log, you can see repeat offenders, and because computer crimes are on the rise, and the federal government is stepping in and gearing up to catch abusers who are making it harder for us, or those who just want to be a decent internet user & neighbors. I have found by a simple phone call to the F.B.I, they will accept a copy of the attack list to review and for investigation. And if everyone who wants to surf securely without being hacked, we all can pull together and act as internet cybercops, to help police up and reduce a problem. It will help in forcing our individual service providers to take action each time they are receiving these packet logs of intruders maliciously invading our personal equipment and privacy.
The other firewall, ZONEALARM 2.0, is for the moment free to download from the internet. It is...OUTSTANDING!! I not only protects, but advises you of outgoing movements of your own system and will prompt you for a response for action. This software is not only EXTREMELY EXCELLENT, but gives you a more detailed information of the attempt shown by a pop-up screen as to who tried to enter your system and when, and I have found that it is faster to take action with and send off to your ISP and eventually copy or send off to the agency who will take action.
If you compliment your system with both firewall software operating systems, you can watch the traffic go across the BlackIce Defender graph screen better than the one ZoneAlarm 2.0 provides, but ZoneAlarm 2.0 gives a better detailed description of the who what when where why and how's and easier to copy and e-mail off faster. Using both together is double protection, what one protection system may not show you, or offer, the other will. I am not saying either one will fail to snag a intruder, but while one or both are in operation, it gives outstanding security to have both running, and doubled up detailed information. (It's like trying to hacksaw through tungsten steel, very impossible). I love my cable modem speed,(AT&T @ Home) my computers are custom built by myself, I invest a lot into hardware, testing, peripheral devices, and software itself and I have tried and used many antivirus software products, where I have found and trusted Dr. Solomon and its weekly updates over the others (Panda is good but can be a bit of a user hassle), antivirus is for virus protection only and will not alert you to snoops and hackers like the firewalls I have written about, but weather you choose BlackIce Defender or ZONEALARM 2.0, or both together to secure and protect your investment and hard drive information, you leave yourself wide open when your online direct connect full time on DSL, ADSL, Cable modems, because of the server system direct connection. And it also happens on regular modem dial up as well while on line.
There are many "Unfriendly" network/internet users out there waiting in pray like a lion about to pounce and hunt down it's dinner, your online banking, stock trades and portfolio's, stored credit card information, personal information, e-mail's, anything on your hard drive while running, is "din-din" to these abusers! PROTECT IT! If we all pull together and utilize these firewall systems to protect ourselves and pester our internet service providers to take action when we show them the packet logs and repeat history offenders, and turn it over as well to your local F.B.I agency for complaint of criminal action, we can help make it safer to utilize the service of our future.
And one last piece of advice. Prior to downloading one or both firewall systems, make sure you have done a scandisk and defrag of your computer(s) for optimal performance, and as you should do this anyway once a month for best computer performance. Stay safe!
