| daugava's Full Review: Southwestern Bell |
After being a loyal Charter Pipeline (cable modem) user for a year, I was
pleased to learn that Southwestern Bell got their act together and began
offering ADSL in my area.
I called them to inquire about the prices and found out that they charge
a little more than cable modem access ($50 vs $35). However, the promise of
fast uploads and "always on" was enough for me to give it a shot.
I decided to keep my cable access until I was certain ADSL can do better.
The tec guy said that even though they only guarantee 384Kbps download
speed, I should get higher throughput, since my home is close to the SWBELL
office. I mentally blessed my parents, who happened to buy such a
strategically placed house... then I said that I am ready to sign up.
I've had ADSL since last August and it opened a world of new possibilities
for me. The permanent connection allows me to run FTP server and WEB server,
so I can access my files wherever I go. My phone line is no longer tied up
when I am online. The speeds range around 50 kilobytes per sec,
occasionally rising as high as 100K/sec.
ADSL works so well, a lot of the time I don't even notice it's there. Like
back in college - where computers just 'happened' to be online all the time
and were incredibly fast.
God bless ADSL!
