DigitalOrb's Full Review: Microsoft Intelli Optical (D58-00026) Mouse
I have always loved Microsoft's ergonomic input devices, starting from their Natural keyboard line to their mice that fit right into your palm. When my 3 year old MS mouse finally broke down (it must have had tens of thousands of miles on its odometer) I was wondering what kind of mouse to get. The optical mice had just come out and I decided to bite the bullet and get one for about $50 dollars (I had a $5 rebate from Best Buy).
The mouse has a USB connector at the end, and because I had tweaked my BIOS for hardware troubleshooting, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it also included a USB to PS2 converter. As soon as I plugged the mouse in, it lit up and Windows recognized it with no problems. I had to install the drivers that came on a CD with the mouse to use its more advanced features like the scroll wheel and the 2 additional buttons that you could program to do pretty much anything. The only shortcoming of this mouse is that the second programmable button on the right side is not very comfortable or convenient to be clicked and I never use it. The other one however is very accessible and I use it every day when browsing the internet (it is used in place of my browser's Back button).
Since I have moved after purchasing the mouse, and I had a chance to test it on how it works without a mouse pad (it works perfect). I even tested it on my carpet, when my computer was half assembled and was still on the floor. I was really impressed as it still worked perfectly.
Another feature that might impress your friends or just make your computer look cool is that the bottom of the mouse (the red part) is always lit up. It dims when the mouse is not used, but it is still on. And since I leave my computer on all the time, once I turn the lights off in the room, the mouse looks really cool like some sort of a UFO equipment.
So far I love my new mouse and I hope it lasts as long as my old one did.
