ikat_knows's Full Review: The Nylon Curtain [Remaster] by Billy Joel
This album is one of Billy Joel's better ones. Well actually he doesn't have any bad ones. But this is the one with "Scandinavian Skies" in it.
Scandinavian Skies is the most weird song I have ever heard. But I love it. This song contains some weird sounds with some very low and off key sounds in the chorus. This song is very complicated to get right. It took the one and only Billy Joel to pull it off. Great job, Billy. The high notes on the piano were excellent and the pleasent sounding bridge added a nice break from the strenious sound created by the song.
What does Scandinavian Skies represent? Well to be honest, I really don't know. Maybe a flight Billy had, maybe a book he read or even could be something to do with drugs. I erally don't know. But the Epinion Guru, Kalisto_9 may know. He has excellent opinions on most subjects. Check him out.
"Wheres the Orchestra" isn't quite a number one hit, but it is a good song to have a laugh. The style and the words speak for themselves.
"Allentown" is a song that 'flows' right through. The song actually works off key changes, not chord changes. That's why it sounds so uplifting.
I love "Goodnight Saigon!" It opens with silencs at first then the sound of a hellicopter graduly gets louder and louder. Then the piano comes in, just the high notes. The melody for this song is very simple, yet the whole song grings out emotion. Both happy emotion and sad. Billy added a nice touch to "Right" and "Night" with his unusual echo technique. Pretty much the same as the 'Ack ack ack ack' in "Movin' Out." And then the chorus!!! Well!! In comes the coir with all its glory and power. I don't know if Billy used a heap of people to sing the chorus or if he did it all himself, but it is magnificent!!!
Once again Billy has ruled the roost with an excellent album.
