| lmgregorio's Full Review: Whirlpool GHW9100L Front Load Washer |
I bought the Whirpool Duet Washer and Dryer, model 9100, in Dove Gray and I am very happy with it. There is one model, the 9200, that costs about $300 more and has more options. I actually tried to buy that one but couldn't find it anywhere and decided to go with the 9100. I am glad that I didn't spend the extra money on the higher end model since this washer does a great job. This washer doesn't have the heater that the 9200 has (which is probably the only option I wish I did have). The extra RPM on the spin cycle probably doesn't make a difference since my clothes come out very dry from the washer. The other difference is in the options - there are many more options on the higher end models but I find that anything I would put in the washer does fine with the settings on the 9100 model.
So - what are the advantages to buying this front loading washer over a traditional washer ?
1) I can wash TWICE as many clothes in this washer than I could in my last washer. My laundry doesn't get backed up anymore (with a family of 5).
2) In the long run I will save money because this washer uses MUCH less (like 65% less) water than my old washer did. Top loaders must fill up to the top with water to wash everything, that is not needed in a front loader. At first I asked - is there ANY water in there? because you don't see a tub full of water like you are used to but my clothes are coming out cleaner!
3) You also use less detergent. Instead of using 1 cup per load (2 cups total when compared to this machine, I use 1/2 cup for twice the amount of clothes! They suggest you buy HE (high efficiency) detergent but I read that it isn't worth it (and I couldn't find any) instead you just use 50% of what you would use with a front loader. Also, it will tell you if you use too much detergent.
4) Your clothes spin so fast, they come out very dry from the washer and therefore you need less drying time- this saves you money too.
5) Your clothes are cleaner - I guess because they are being washed better - but we noticed a big difference in how clean our clothes were after we started using this machine.
6) There are plenty of options and they are customizable for all your needs - they have a whites, heavy duty, normal, delicate, and hand-wash cycles. You can also choose extra spin and extra rinse options as well. You can use the automatic setting or you can change it to wash your heavy duty in COLD instead of WARM if you want, etc.
7) It is cool to watch your clothes get washed. With the washer and dryer, they have a window so you can watch the clothes wash and dry - the kids love it - and I must admit, I have been drawn to it too....
8) It is better for your clothes - from what I have read, since there is no agitation (as you have with top loaders) your clothes last longer.
9) Your wash time usually equals your dry time so it makes doing laundry easier.
I also bought the pedestals that the washer and dryer sit on and it was worth it. They hold a fair amount of stuff underneath but the biggest thing is that you stand upright to load and unload - I would hate to be bending over all the time. They are costly - $150 each so you could build something instead - we were thinking of doing that but ended up buying them in the end - as they look nice.
We feel like we have our own little laundromat in our laundry room. Now, if I could just find a machine that could wash, dry, fold, and put away my clothes - I would be all set.
