Kindermusik is the best known music class franchise for preschoolers. It's a pricey program because of the materials that you purchase, but if you find a good teacher it can be well worthwhile. The teachers take a training class from Kindermusik International to become certified to teach. Some teachers are also working professional musicians, musicians of similar caliber. Others have only taken the Kindermusik course for their musical training, so take care in selecting a teacher.
This book "Watch Me" came as part of our Kindermusik package several years ago. One of our cds has the words of this book recorded, not as a song but as a dynamically spoken poem. The text of this book is all about dynamics- loud and soft sounds.
Each page spread shows a child and an animal. The child imitates the animal. The pattern goes like this: "Elephant can stomp with heavy feet. Watch me stomp with heavy feet." This is a great book for a toddler. You want to read it dynamically, so you speak very loudly for elephant, and very quietly for the cat.
Pitch can also be introduced with this book. You can make your voice go high at the end for the kangaroo, and swing high and low, and up and down with the monkey. For the wriggling worm and the fluttering butterfly, you can even use your vibrato if you have it. Watch out though, it is very hard to get some little kids to stop singing with vibrato if they get the hang of it. At the end, you have ladybug, who stops and makes no sound. Hearing the silences is very important for developing music reading skills later on.
The artwork is very engaging. It was created by Kindermusik employees and families. The backgrounds are fingerpaint and crayon resist. The children have a variety of skin tones and hairstyles. The animals are freely drawn and all have big smiles. The artwork can inspire many projects for the days when it's warm enough to fingerpaint outside.
This book works well with the whole Kindermusik package (available at a Kindermusik class or probably on Ebay- look for the Wiggles and Giggles Kit) or by itself (it is sometimes sold with a cd and tambourine under the title Sing, Dance and Read with Me).
