Pros: Complex, dynamic song-writing.
Cons: Two very typical, utterly predictable indie-type songs.

petey, thanks for your words -- it's always encouraging to hear feedback like that. Epinions helped me to develop very much as a writer and person, since I could always view my own writing and see what needed work, and hear criticism from other writers. I actually think that "I, Teenager" is one of the shoddiest pieces of writing ever produced (I feel like I no longer know the kid who wrote it), but it was a convenient outlet at the time. Anyway, I've been down with the indie for about four years now and I'll continue going down that path, so uh, fear not. Unless I happen upon a brain-damaging car accident that taints my palate forever.

And as for Grizzly Bear, I wasn't only describing you, but really myself -- I saw interest in Grizzly Bear spike very high after they toured with Radiohead.

Thanks, good doctor -- I was recently notified that Internet access is spreading frequently there, so I expect to be around more than occasionally.

Yeah, as we've experienced before, it's something special when you can actually agree with someone on whether or not record is perfect and great; I personally feel "Dark Side of the Moon" calling me pretty frequently, if not as frequently as I do with "Kid A."

One record I forgot to mention on here is Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea;" that is both perfect and great (and I'm clueless as to why it eluded me; I've now gone and added it).

"...it was when Radiohead announced that Grizzly Bear would open on a few dates that people started saying, 'Man, I'm really excited about that new Grizzly Bear album'..."

You described me exactly here--my point of enthusiasm for Grizzly Bear was after hearing they were Johnny Greenwood's favorite band and joining their tour. Anything Radiohead-approved is desirable in my music collection.

May I just say--years ago when I first wandered onto Epinions, you became one of my favorite writers not just due to being so articulate and humorous, but also because, being around my age, you seemed to give the "teen Epinion reviewer" credibility. There was so much thought to what you presented--even when it wasn't a personal "I, Teenager" essay--that it sort of showed me what someone like me was capable of, raising my own bar of expectations and encouraging me to reach it. Because you were merely being yourself, your mark was made, and I feel like I'm a better writer and thinker because you.

For that reason, I think you will accomplish so many incredible things as a peace corps member. Despite the fact that as Epinions cohorts none of us really know anything about one another, I still find it so fitting, in light of the determined approach to living life that you exuded in your "I, Teenager" series so long ago, that this is the course your life is taking. What I'm trying to say in all this is "Way to go."

Keep inspiring people.
Keep being inspired. And keep listening to indie music! You and knowncutter are a gateway to indiedom that I've put a lot of stock into...

Best of luck with your adventures in the Peace Corps. My brother did that a few years ago, as did a number of college friends, and they always found internet access in the most unlikely of places, so I'm sure we'll see you at least on occasion. Here's to all the great experiences you'll have.

I'm excited to hear this record. While I thought "Yellow House" was enjoyable, I didn't really get excited about this band until "Friend EP." As long as they continue the development they showed on that EP (and from your review, it sounds like they did) I'll be falling for "Veckatimest."

That said, "Dark Side of the Moon?!" Really? I admittedly loved the record once upon a time, but I feel like a perfect/great record should spontaneously demand your attention. For example, if I start thinking about "Kid A" for some reason or other, about half the time I'll then get a sudden, extreme craving to listen to the album and nothing else. "Dark Side" is too boring to inspire that sort of impulse. Again, I like the record for the most part, but I get way more excited thinking about listening to "Animals." Just me, though.

Best of luck abroad,
Dave
