aparoidx's Full Review: Trauma Center: Under the Knife for DS
If you haven't already heard of this game, you're truly missing out. Trauma Center: Under the Knife for Nintendo DS was (and still is) the best (if not only) surgery simulator, ever.
You play as a young surgeon by the name of Derek Stiles. You join a local hospital in hopes of becoming a great surgeon. At first, you don't seem to care much for your job, but after a few lessons, your peers will get you back on track. Thus, before you know it, you'll oftentimes be finding yourself putting others' lives before yours.
In the game there are a variety of tools you'll be operating with. These include the magnifying glass (also the x-ray tool), scalpel, stitches, syringe, bandages, laser (for removing viruses and parasites, cure-all antibiotic gel, a suction tool (words fail me at the time), forceps, and your hand (used to massage, and one other use, which, for storyline purposes, I will not say.).
As far as operations go, it's usually something different every time, or a mix of a few older operations. You'll be doing open-heart surgery, throat surgery, and even defusing a bomb. Also, you'll be fighting off the primary enemy, an infectious virus known as GUILT. Again, for plot-line purposes, I will not go into detail on this subject.
There are a number of items to be watching on the top screen. You're under the pressure of a time limit (varying from operation to operation), have a set number of mistakes you're allowed to make, a score display, and finally, the conversation going on during operations. Normally the game will momentarily pause during conversations.
The operations are not always easy. In fact, the game can get very stressful at times. You'll be frantically switching tools, using them with incredible speed, and focusing on multiple objectives at once. Don't let this discourage you; it's not as bad as it sounds.
For the game rating, T for Teen, it has this rating primarily for language and blood and "violence". Obviously this game isn't a wise choice for a 6-year-old.
Overall, for a common price of $20, this game is virtually a steal. I highly suggest it; you won't regret it.
