| sugar's Full Review: Toshiba SD-3109U DVD Player |
When I came across the Toshiba SD3109 in an online auction, I really wondered how good it could be for only $299. For $300 I had a hard time finding a DVD player from a reputable manufacturer. The more I use the Toshiba, the more I love it.
The SD3109 really has all the options that you would expect from a more expensive, higher end unit. For example, the dual trays are, by no means, an essential option on a DVD player, but it is a real convenience when playing audio CD's.
I am especially pleased with the decoder. It provides excellent channel separation. The SD3109 allows for more fine tuning than I care to go into. You can tune numerous aspects of the sound output, video format/output, etc. However, this does come at a cost. You really can't get the most out of this unit without sitting down and thoroughly reading the instruction manual. I know. No one really likes to do it, but it will really pay off.
Options aside, this baby really performs! I have heard of lesser DVD players not being able to handle complex movies such as The Matrix. Don't worry about that here. The Matrix was the first DVD I popped in. It ran flawlessly. Even the zoom (as well as any other option I tried) was taken in stride.
Installation was even a breeze, and can be completed in just a few minutes (assuming you have all the necessary cables). The manual provides very useful diagrams for the installation, based on your receiver setup, i.e. Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital Pro Logic, THX, etc.
For the bargain basement a/v enthusiast or a someone just looking for a solid performer at a great price, you'll not be disappointed with the Toshiba SD3109. Of course the "hard core" enthusiast may want for a little more, but you'll have to pay dearly for it. There is nothing in this price range that will give you a better DVD player (with decoder). Two thumbs up Toshiba!
