ram_cv's Full Review: John Grisham and Janet McAlpin - The Client
Preface
John Grisham has excelled in potraying the emotions of a child's mind in this novel. The novel begins at a very brisk pace and as the previous review says seems to loose some pace and stutters to a decent end.
The Story
The story begins with brothers Mark aged 11 and Ricky aged 8 witnessing the suicide of a lawyer. But before dying the dead man spills some secrets out including the murder of Senator Boyette. The incident leaves Ricky in a coma and Mark shaken to the core of his heart. Enter FBI, looking to solve the Boyette murder mystery. This leaves Mark terrified as he feels that he would be murdered if he tries to reveal the truth. Reluctantly, Mark is forced to take the help of Reggie a lawyer who takes cases of delinquent children.
Then, advised by Reggie, Mark tracks a middle path without siding either with the underworld or the FBI. Until at the climax when Reggie is forced to tip her hand in an exciting finish. The novel has been well written. But some of the descriptions of certain human feelings seem to be overdone and stretched which makes you yawn at some places or other.
Pros and Cons
1) The story is an excellent insight into child mentality.
2) The suspense of the story is also quite compelling.
3) The story touches some social aspects like child delinquency.
4) But, the story just goes to sleep at some sections and it becomes a drag.
5) Probably the mafia has been shown as much to easy to handle than is.
Summary
