The Acne Cure: The Revolutionary Nonprescription Treatment Plan That Cures Even the Most Severe Acne and Shows Dramatic Results in As Little As 24 Hours Books
buzimom1's Full Review: The Acne Cure: The Revolutionary Nonprescription T...
I was fortunate to see an interview with the author of The Acne Cure, Dr. Dubrow, on a talk show one morning. I am a 28 year old mother and have suffered from moderate acne for ten years. I have visited three separate dermatologists and have been unsuccessful in clearing my skin...until six weeks ago.
The first part of this review I will discuss the book and later on I will discuss the effectiveness of the Acne Cure skin care plan.
The book is designed with the acne sufferer in mind: we are reading the book to be cured quickly. Dr. Dubrow gives the brief essentials of the program within the first four chapters so that the reader may purchase the products immediately and begin treatment.
In the first chapter Dubrow describes the skin as an organ and gives insight into its physiology and function in layman's terms. He then explains the different stages of acne, describing the progression of the disease and how it is a reaction to a series of "malfunctions" in the pores.
One of the most helpful aspects of the book is Dr. Dubrow's reliance on clinical data to verify his treatment program. Research on each element of his plan is carefully documented and contrasted with alternative combinations of drugs and ointments.
The reader will be relieved to see the short and inexpensive list of products he will need to purchase to begin treatment. All ingredients are sold over-the-counter and are easily found in a grocery store (except one ingredient I will mention later). Dr. Dubrow adheres to a philosophy that the patient should try the mildest treatment first before seeking stronger drugs such as Accutane. He boldly states that his program cures 95% of all cases of acne and the remaining 5% see a dramatic reduction in the condition and can seek medical treatment from a dermatologist to clear remaining blemishes.
Dr. Dubrow explains the options for scar removal once the skin is healed. He also gives the reader a sense of urgency because every pimple our skin creates is an opportunity for a nasty scar, so the best practice is to avoid getting the pimples in the first place.
The final chapters investigate the individual differences in acne patients. For instance, he has a more intensive plan for African-Americans because acne seems to be more stubborn in black skin than in fairer complexions. Dr. Dubrow outlines a long-term skin care regimen that is easier to follow than the six-week cure program. He also describes "best practices" for beautiful, ageless skin.
Fine details of the treatment are beyond the scope of this review, but the basic ingredients are salicylic acid (2%), glycolic acid (8-10%), benzol peroxide (2-5%), and ice packs. By far the most difficult ingredient to find is the glycolic acid. I had to go to a pharmacist to get exactly what Dubrow described. Not to worry--he lists several manufacturers that produce the stuff if you can't find it.
The author claims that within 24 hours your skin will be improved and that most acne will be gone within 6 weeks. I had slower results. Within three days my inflamation was gone but I continued to get very small breakouts (a huge difference, nonetheless) for several weeks to the present. For a few weeks, my skin was flawless but I ran out of the glycolic acid and blemishes erupted a few days later. This program has cleared my face, chest and back so well that my husband keeps commenting on it. Having clear skin is a huge boost to my self-esteem!
This book saved me thousands of dollars in dermatologist visits, skin peels and medications. The entire cost for all three solutions plus a good-quality ice pack was under $30. Add to that the fact that I borrowed the book from my local library, and this has been quite a deal!
Update on my skin's progress: I have used the Dubrow Acne Cure now for five months. My skin is clearer than it has ever been before. I do occasionally suffer from small breakouts, but they are much less of a hassle. I have not had a really bad acne inflammation since beginning the program. The salycilic acid and Alpha Hydroxy acid also will help prevent razor bumps in those areas that ladies tend to get irritated. Just treat that skin immediately after shaving and the bumps will not appear!
Additionally, I have had significant success clearing up back and chest acne. Many adults suffer from body acne and would benefit from treating body areas other than the face. This treatment plan will give your back a smooth, clear texture for swimsuit season.
