| sfperegrine's Full Review: Tempur-Pedic Swedish Mattress |
My husband and I purchased the outrageously expensive Tempurpedic Grand mattress and pillows just over a month ago, swayed by the lack of pressure points, inability to feel ones partner moving, and not having to ever flip the mattress. It was the most comfortable bed we tried in the store, and we bought into the you spend 1/3 of your life on your mattress argument.
Tempurpedics "visco-elastic memory foam" is a polyurethane-based material i.e., a petrochemical product.
I immediately experienced the out-gassing effect, a terrible sickly-sweet chemical smell that was very strong for about 10 nights and interrupted my sleep. This smell is still in the mattress and 2 pillows, and permeates through the bedcovers and into our nightclothes.
Worse, my husband (who is not typically sensitive to the environment) experiences the following health problems whenever he sleeps on the bed: inability to sleep (waking up every hour), back aches, sore throat, fatigue, sleep-apnea-like-snoring; while I experience the following: sore throat, fatigue, headaches (which I rarely have), eyes swollen & itchy & sore, slight asthma, and itching from top of head to feet. ALL of these problems disappear for each of us within 24 hours if we sleep on the couch or in another bed, and return again when we spend just one night on the Tempurpedic. (We use organic cotton bedding, nontoxic biodegradable detergents with no petrochemicals, and no chlorine products; nothing else in our bedroom has changed besides the bed).
Turns out most mattresses consist of a variety of petroleum-based compounds, chemicals and controversial flame retardants (including formaldehyde!) that are proven to be carcinogenic and toxic. A little research will shock you.
We are now opting for a wool & cotton all-natural bed that will not make us sick.
