| bmcnichol's Full Review: Spinmaster ICEE Maker |
All my son wanted this year for Christmas was a Spinmaster Icee Maker. I seen a few commercials for the Icee Maker. Each commercial my son saw, the more he really wanted the Icee Maker. Mommy wasnt too thrilled about having an Icee Maker come into the house. But Santa couldnt disappoint him Christmas morning, now could he?
Wake up Christmas morning and there is no Icee Maker under our tree at home. Oh no, wasnt my son getting an Icee Maker? On to grandmas house we go. As we are eating dinner, my son expresses his disappointment that Santa didnt bring him the one and only thing he asked for for Christmas.
Fast forward, we are opening presents at grandmas. Guess what, Santa left the Icee Maker under grandmas tree. Oh Goody!
Home we go and the first thing out of my sons mouth is, I want to make an Icee. Ok daddy volunteered to help make Icee's.
Daddy opens the box and reads the directions. Daddy grumbling, This is a lot of work to make a da** Icee. But daddy, I really want to make an Icee.
Out of the box, the Icee Maker comes with the Icee Maker, which needs assembled, a red plastic measuring cup and two red plastic cups.
I washed all the parts included then daddy sat down to assemble.
The Icee Maker takes some time to set up. You need to attach the clear mixing chamber to the red base. Place the auger in the mixing chamber. Are you done yet? No.
Place the paddle into the chamber and pour in a cold drink up to the fill line. We choose fruit juice for our first icee. Secure the ice mixer in the ice canister. Fill the ice canister with small chips of ice and add a measuring cup full of salt. Place the lid on the ice canister and shake. Are you done yet? NO.
Place the ice canister in the auger and place the lid on the mixing chamber. Attach the crank and lock it into place. Now start cranking. The directions say to crank about five minutes but we found it took a bit longer then that. We cranked for about ten minutes.
You will be able to see when the Icee is done. Put a cup under the dispenser and pour.
Wow all that work. Lets enjoy an Icee.
We pour the Icee into one of the small plastic red cups. We start filling the other cup but wait, there is only enough Icee left to fill about half of the second cup. All that work for a small cup and a half of Icee. ARGH!
Actually with tasting the Icee that was made, I was rather surprised that it really did taste like an Icee. Of course, my son was thrilled and wanted to make more. We made a few more rounds and then it was time to clean up. Clean up is relatively easy but I was surprised that our red fruit punch had stained the inside of the mixing chamber. We washed all parts with hot soapy water and put it back into the box. Unfortunately, this is the only play time our Icee Maker has seen. Not that mom or dad are disappointed.
So what do we think about our Icee Maker? We think it is a lot of work for a little bit of Icee satisfaction. It would be nice if it made more in one round, then it does.
I also think a younger child would get bored with the Icee Making even faster then my son did because it takes a bit of strength and time to turn the handle on the Icee Maker.
My son received this from Santa, but I checked on amazon.com and it is selling for $19.99. Personally I could find a lot better things to do with that twenty dollars.
The Icee Maker is recommended for children six to twelve. I think the younger kids like the idea of making Icee's but will not like the long wait to get an Icee.
Even though we did enjoy the taste of our long awaited Icees, we do not recommend the Spinmaster Icee Maker as it takes too long to set up and is too much work for a little bit of satisfaction. Id rather run to the store and pay .99 cents for an Icee then go through the hassle of assembling and making my own.
