To tell you the truth, when I opened the package to Labtec's Spin 70 speakers, I wasn't overly impressed. The plastic looked a little cheap and the secondary speaker is so light it made me wonder if there was actually a speaker in there. Also they use only one driver per unit, and not a big one at that.
So, as usual, I plugged them in, loaded up my MP3 player and cranked up a Matthew Good Band song. First word that came to me was "WOW!!!"
These speakers absolutely scream! Who would have thought 6 watts (per speaker) would be so loud! Cymbal crashes are so incredible you would think it was right in front of you; vocals/midrange are clear and natural, and bass response is surprisingly good for such a small driver, I kept trying to see if Labtec had hidden a woofer in there! Add a subwoofer and surround speakers and you get near live-quality sound. I had these and my subwoofer hooked up to my television and I almost thought I was at the movie theater!
Labtec added a '3D surround button' to the speakers, and at first I had no idea what to do with it. When I pushed it, it enhanced the highs a little bit, but nothing special. Then I figured out that when I attached a subwoofer and pressed the 3D surround button, the sound was enhanced even more, making the sound even more incredible!
Enough about the sound, now on to the build-quality:
As I said before, the secondary speaker is a little on the light side, but that doesn't really matter now. Labtec was thoughtful enough to put the amplifier inside the speaker unit, which means saved space on your power bar. They also included microphone and headphone hookups, and a treble/bass toggle. The latter really doesn't do a lot, below half the sound is 'tinny', and above half the sound is full and natural. Common with Labtec products, the wires are a bit too long, I mean most people would put these within 4 feet of their computer. And the cable storage under the speakers are pretty much useless with so much wire. Also, it may just be my set, but when I try to turn them off, the knob does not want to 'click' without some force.
In general, Labtec's Spin 70 speakers are excellent for the money and I would recommend them to all PC audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts on a budget.
