Two of the most effortless things you can do to pamper your body is 1) wear good shoes and 2) sleep on a quality mattress. After many years of sleeping on no-name brands or hand-me-down mattresses, I decided last year that it was time to indulge myself and splurge on a comfy, luxurious mattress set. After pouncing and rolling around on many different brands, I finally discovered a set that was within my budget and standards...the Simmons Beautyrest Kent Luxury model. Though the $500 price tag burned a small hole in my wallet for a little bit, I now pat myself on the back for making such a great long-term purchasing decision.
With care, a good mattress can last many years without lumping or creaking, so I think its well worth it to “spring” for a higher quality and slightly more expensive model, instead of paying extra in a few years to replace the cheap mattress you decided to buy instead. Although mattress salesmen will provide you information on spring count and so forth, the ultimate criteria for purchasing a mattress set is how well you enjoy it when you roll around on it at the showroom (a must-do!!), and if it is cost-effective for you.
The Kent Luxury Model
I decided that the Kent Luxury set was both cost-effective and suitable for my needs, so I bought it. Simmons has four major product lines, including the Beautyrest, BackCare, Connoisseur, and Specialty Sleep. The Kent Luxury set is a mid-priced Beautyrest.
Durability – To keep the middle of most beds from sagging, it’s recommended that you flip your mattress every few months. I have not flipped my Beautyrest once in the full year that I’ve owned it, and have not experienced any noticeable sagging or wear and tear. Is it in part because of the Built So Well You Never Have To Flip It! design? Beautyrest mattresses are designed with durable foam layers and pocketed coils that are supposed to prevent the mattress from losing its shape. My Kent Luxury model has innersprings that are covered by 95% urethane foam and 5% cotton batting. The stitching on this mattress still appear very durable and secure.
Comfort – The major selling point of the Beautyrest mattress is its Do Not Disturb design. Instead of open coils that come in normal beds, Beautyrest mattresses have individual pocketed coils prevent motion transfer from one side of the bed to the other. That means that if you sleep with a partner, the likeliness that you will be disturbed by his/her tossing and turning is minimized. I like to occasionally plop into bed, and I never experience "aftershocks" the way I have with other mattresses.
Style – With the Beautyrest line, it seems that the more expensive the mattress set, the less likely you’ll end up with gaudy fabric design. The expensive sets that have more bells and whistles tend to have luxurious-looking white, off-white, or light-colored solid or jacquard designs, while the less expensive ones are more likely to have floral prints. However, the selection is wide enough where you can find a design you can live with, without having to compromise on actual quality. My Kent Luxury is a muted cream color, with a magnolia floral print.
Where to Buy a Beautyrest Mattress
Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses are only sold at authorized dealers, which includes their own Simmons showrooms, large department stores such as Macy’s, and a few smaller mattress stores. There are also Simmons factory outlets, which have many discontinued and floor models available at a reduced price. My Kent Luxury set, which retailed for close to $700, cost me a little under $500 for the mere reason that it was a discontinued model in one of their showrooms. Discontinued mattresses are simply mattresses that the manufacturer has decided to not produce any more, to make way for newer and better models. The showrooms also usually have seasonal sales, where they may absorb the cost of sales tax and delivery. I purchased my mattress set during last year's pre-Thanksgiving Day sale, in which sales tax and delivery were both free of charge.
Final Thoughts
I'm completely satisfied with the purchase of my Beautyrest mattress. The reason why I decided to buy a Beautyrest last year was because I was going through a down-phase, and felt like I needed some major pampering. Slumbering on a well-built and comfortable bed became helpful in easing my stress and anxieties at the time. My Beautyrest is my haven, with it's fluffy top layer that I seem to melt into. At the same time, this bed is semi-firm, so I don't ever feel sunken in, just wrapped in softness. My only regret is that I didn't buy a Queen size, so that I would have even more room to roll around. However, I probably won't have to replace my Beautyrest for a long time...but when I do, it will no doubt be for bigger, better Beautyrest.
