| popsrocks's Full Review: Safety 1st Sounds 'N Lights Discovery Walker |
One good thing about being a grandpa is the fact that many of the baby's toys, and gear are already assembled by the child's parents before ol' pops gets them.
Our home is perpetually filled with one, two, three or more of our five grand daughters. The youngest is now 7 months old. Her parents have left one of her walkers to stay at our place. At seven months this little girl needs to start moving around a bit and just as important have a safe place to play and build up her hand-eye co-ordination.
Well Made and Simple Enough To use
The Safety 1st Sounds'n Lights Discovery Walker seems to be well constructed. I do trust Safety 1st and I believe this product follows their usual "safety first" standards.
The walker can be set in three heights. It's fairly easy to set the heights though it would not be a daily chore if the walker is always kept in the open position. Once the walker is at the preferred height a sliding latch secures it so it cannot collapse. That's a good feature. We at times do close the walker for storage. It folds nice and flat with just the toys adding the extra height.
Baby Playing and Walking
At seven months my grand daughter has just begun to be able to move the walker using her feet. Right now she seems to be more interested in playing with the five toys that are out in front of her. She can reach all of them. They are a combinations of rolling, swinging and see-saw type motion that have clickers and rattles and such in them. As baby plays, she gets a different response from the varied toys including one that lights up.
It is more the rattle sound of a ball that spins on a horizontal axis that gets the most attention. It's the simplest for a child this age to move. The spinning mirror gets some attention though she hasn't picked up on the mirror reflecting her image.
A dinosaur that spins with a clicking action is too hard for her to turn just yet. I'll update as she gets older and let you know what may attract her(or bore her) at a later age. Perhaps as a one year old in five months.
The one light does not attract her at all.
Though the baby is in the seat some of her older cousins, one and a half year, and two years old, will also play with the toys from the outside. The interaction between the children is fun to watch.
The one and a half year old, who now walks is not interested in staying in the walker for any more than five minutes or so but it is a help to grandpa at times when he has to change a diaper for the younger one. Ha, the truth is ol' pops doesn't do that any longer. He did his Mr. Mom stint years back and is now retired has from the aromas, colours and textures of newly-formed, baby-bottom mush.
More About the Walker
All the activity items are mounted or set into two swing out activity trays. A secure and easy to open latch that baby cannot reach allows grandpa to swing the trays open revealing a large open tray that doesn't allow spills due to a one inch lip all around. This is a good area for baby to eat from or perhaps place another age appropriate toy.
I like that it is large.
Last Thoughts
I like these kind of walkers. I believe it can be a safe place for baby. Of course stairs are a hazard and MUST be blocked off. The little one can move this one with a little effort. My grand daughter who can walk can run when in the thing. Fortunately she has NOT tried to climb out. She's not in it often at all.
The locks for the position heights and swinging toy tray are easy to use. Baby cannot be in the walker if trying to adjust the height.
The plastic cleans well and the tray area is also easy enough to clean even with the swing "hinges" on the corners. The seat itself can be taken off and machine washed. It requires a little bit of work to do so.
The toys do attract the baby and keep her interested for a while. I would go for this over a simple walker without toys. I like the combination of fun and practical use.
